+162 Isn't it interesting that the one common thread between religions is the belief in perpetual consciousness, be it in some type of metaphysical afterlife or otherwise. You would think that this would imply that one of our deepest desires is to live forever and yet, when asked the age old question "If you could live forever, would you?" the general consensus seems to be "No". amirite?

I think people want to believe that after they die, that isn't where their journey ends, that they will then live the rest of their 'afterlife' in a utopia. In my opinion i think our deepest desires is to not live forever, but to have the reassurance that, in a sense we will never cease to exist, but simply exist in an alternate world where we can continue to exist. If that makes sense?

... That's no fair. When you ask someone if they want to live forever, they assume you mean in this world. If they were to say "do you want to live forever in the afterlife" the answer would be yes.

Yeah and the fact people probably say no to living forever is because, could you imagine the pain of losing loved ones over and over again, watching them slowly grow older and older until they die? Personally i'd rather live a normal lifespan than have to watch people i love die around me for the rest of my life, which would literally be forever.

You'd learn to move on fairly quickly. It really wouldn't be that bad.

Yeah but your emotions would be destroyed in the process, so you'd be apathetic. Meaning you can't experience joy, excitement, happiness etc. so it would be kind of pointless to live forever without being able to experience anything.

I would love to live forever in this world.

TL;DR

I think that i people didn't beleive in an afterlife, life itself would seam a bit meaningless. Sure, it would be great to see all the cool new inventions but loosing loved ones is always terrible. Just look at Doctor Who.
