I think there was a email service that did offer this a few years ago. I can't remember which one and I don't know if they're still doing it, but my guess would be that it was probably restricted to users on the same domain. Meaning, if you have Hotmail and your friend has GMail, it wouldn't work. You'd both have to have the same service.
