No. You tip what you want and based on the service you got.

I don't see why we should tip waiters, as opposed to cashiers at grocery stores, etc.

If we do not tip the waiters/waitresses then the price of food will go up because the company must pay their employees minimum wage. As of right now they make, $2-4 an hour + tips. If it is not a busy night, and there are no tips, the company will compensate for the money to equal minimum wage. Without the tips, the company would in essence lose money. No tips = increased food prices. I used to be a waiter, so I do know. And here is a link for more proof. http://www.cafemom.com/group/416/forums/read/10912073/Waitresses_you_do_make_minimum_wage_Its_illegal_not_too?next=31

Isn't the price of food already up when you factor in tips? That link provides information for the United States (via a forum no less). Up north, at least in my province, they get paid just $1.35 less than everyone else (if they serve alcohol; regular minimum wage if they don't). If at least one person per hour buys a $10 meal and tips 15%, the waiter would already be making more than general minimum wage. Then again, one could argue that maybe the cooking staff rely on tip pooling as well, even though they wouldn't fall under the reduced minimum wage category. One could argue many things, I suppose.

THANK YOU. I hate how people are like, "how much would..how much is.." mama always said if you have to ask you can't afford it. It's bull when I give good service, follow my good service steps, I smile, and I really go above and beyond because I know the menu really well and the average customer. And I had a party of 11 people give me a penny while I was busy. Rude! But then there's the two guys who leave me twenty dollars because I was "exceptional" that make up for it. But you tip those people!! Even if you see a tip jar, 1-3 dollars PER person depending on what is purchased and the rate of service. Evening getting a haircut or your nails done or even starbucks. It's a tough economy, sure, but It's how we are trying to make our living in said tough economy. Thank you, Op. High five, lol. And grocery stores, theyre standing there and making almost up to fifteen an hour to ring you up (at least in california depending on how long they've worked there or the store).

Thank you guys for proving my point! I am a waitress and I make only 4.25 an hour which is about three or four dollars below minimum wage. We rely on tips to compensate for our low pay. Most restaurants I know are like that. It is common courtesy to tip any wait staff you have, even if they were terrible.

AGREED! you can't imagine how irritating it is when you work your tail off waiting on 5-6 tables at a time and someone gyps you on your tip.

It depends on the service I get, if the service it great 25%+ if the service is good 15% and if the service is Bad, NOTHING!

It sucks when you work really hard and have a table of 11 children and two moms and the kids think it is funny to rip up their stryofoam cups and scatter them around and then I am responsible for their mess because their parents are too lazy to control their kids. You would be surprised how many people you meet when working in the food industry and how many complaints you get in one day. I love my job don't get my wrong, but I work hard for my tips just like every other waiter/waitress. Thank you for backing me up :)
