Not really an inside joke, but it's something only they'd understand. Hermione, Harry, and Ron called Sirius "Snuffles" in company.

'Cause the writer would have to go into detail for us to get the jokes, and that just kills the book.

Well, you're both right in a way. But my post is just simply an observation. Actually, it would depend on the writer's skill whether he killed it or not because it would make it much more realisitic.
