Characters in books never seem to have inside jokes with their friends, amirite?

I read one where the main character had an inside joke with his little brother.

Inside jokes are the most important part of friendship

well, there may be some but I just never saw any. And agreed, they are :)

Not really an inside joke, but it's something only they'd understand.
Hermione, Harry, and Ron called Sirius "Snuffles" in company.

love your example-HARRY POTTER RULES

'Cause the writer would have to go into detail for us to get the jokes, and that just kills the book.

But the paragraph and a half adds a level of realism dont you think?

Well, you're both right in a way. But my post is just simply an observation. Actually, it would depend on the writer's skill whether he killed it or not because it would make it much more realisitic.
