+274 What's up with the school rule of "Your shorts must go down to your fingertips."? Some people have really long arms! Amirite?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Tell me about it. I have extremely long arms and they are about 2-3 inches above my knee. I get in trouble for shorts that my friends wouldn't normally get in trouble for. >:(

by Anonymous 13 years ago

My school has a precise measurement "Your skirt must not be higher then 10cm above the knee" Yeah, nobody follows that... There was this rumour going around shortly after that rule was passed that some teacher actually was measuring the girls skirt and then he flipped it up, he was and is still known as a pedophile

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah there was a rumor at my middle school the the principal made girls bend over to see if their ass showed in their skirt/dress.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That teacher is gross

by Anonymous 7 years ago

whenever we leave classrooms, all the girls are tugging at the bottoms of their shorts, just in case.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Dang, that must suck. I hate that stupid rule. Some girls have freakishly short arms and get away with booty shorts. It pisses me off.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I hate that rule!! My teachers are really strict about it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i think all the teachers assume that if you have long arms you have long legs

by Anonymous 12 years ago

They tell us to use that as judgement, but they don't check like that. In fact, idk if they have ever checked somebody at my school.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Our school had the three inch rule. Also tank tops have to be at least three finger widths.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

At my school, we aren't allowed to wear tank tops at all :(

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Yeah my middle school had a shoulders covered policy. It wasn't really an issue because I font really like to wear tank tops by themselves. It's not a big deal to just wear a shrug with it though :/

by Anonymous 11 years ago

At my school we have all those rules, but there is little to no enforcement of them. Not kidding, there are girls who wear strapless tops and shorts up to their ass and don't get in trouble.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Should they get in trouble though?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I think that many of my schools dress code rules are fairly ridiculous, for example, the shorts rule at my school is that they have to be at least two inch below the fingertips. I think this is dumb, and I break this rule all of the time. But the extent to which some of the girls break the rules, they should be punished for it. My shorts never are shorter than what I, my parents, and my friends deem appropriate. If they were too shorts, I would get hell from both of the last two groups I listed. But when I can see a girls ass when she still is wearing shorts, there is a problem. So I guess my answer to the question is yes, I do think they should get in trouble. Also strapless tops are usually just not school appropriate.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That's probably why Slenderman is so angry.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I'm not sure if they're still considered shorts if they go to my fingertips. So I just fold my arms when I pass the few teachers that actually care.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Some people also have REALLY short arms.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I have long legs and arms, so any shorts I wear look short.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Ditto. Plus I have a short torso.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

We had that, but worse was the rule for our shirts- if you put your arms straight up above your head, no skin could show or the shirt was too short.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Um duh. High waisted pants/shorts/skirts.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

See, I'm long waisted, so I'd have several inches of overlap on my jeans and shirt and get in trouble. It doesn't matter what I wear, that rule doesn't work. So...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

What the hell kind of rule is that? It's not like you walk around with your arms above your head.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

The idea was that if we reached for something or bent over, skin would show (for about 3 seconds...)

by Anonymous 11 years ago

An entire three seconds. And it'd probably show your back. How sexual. Hahaha

by Anonymous 11 years ago

We had the rule that your shorts couldn't go above the ankle.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Did you mean knee?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Our county got a new dress code last year and IT SUCKS. Shorts have to be mid thigh (so no booty shorts, half of us had to go out and buy a bunch of new shorts) and no tank tops or muscle shirts.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Why wear booty shorts to school? I never understood this. You go to school to learn, not show off your body. That's what parties are for.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

That's not a harsh dress code...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Mchalla3, yeah but people get hot in the summer and heat and sweating is pretty distracting

by Anonymous 11 years ago

For the most part, you aren't out in the sun that often when you're in school.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

My school that I just left had no such rule. Which is a good thing because nobody I know even OWNS shorts below fingertip length.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

My school has that rule and I only own one pair of shorts that follow the rule.. I just try to not walk with my hands near my sides when I'm in the halls lol

by Anonymous 11 years ago

My junior high had super strict rules about clothing... But at my highscool, as long as there's no nipple or genitals showing, you can wear it

by Anonymous 11 years ago

There's a school in my city whose dress code is "wear shoes and be clean." So you can be naked, but you can't be dirty.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

These rules are pretty sexist. If you don't believe me, ask your teacher WHY the school has these rules. They will always mention girls. As in; "The boys are distracted by girls showing a lot of skin?" Are you serious? There are so many things wrong with this: 1. It assumes that all the boys are heterosexual. This erases sexual orientations other than heterosexuality. (Imagine a gay asexual person being told that he's going to be distracted by the girls!) 2. It assumes that boys get distracted by girls, but girls don't get distracted by boys. This says that boys are predators, but girls aren't. It is this idea that trivialises violence or assault when it's girl-on-guy. 3. It assumes that it is the girl's duty to protect herself from boys, it's not the boy's duty to control himself. This perpetuates rape culture and victim blaming, and strengthens the notion that women are always at fault when bad shit happens to them. If a girl is raped, the rapist won't be blamed for ignoring consent. However, everyone will rush to ask the girl what she was wearing or if she had been flirting with the guy.

Not a single NW commenter. Interesting...

School dress codes are so messed up like what if you only had bootie shorts? And plus shorts that are lower than your finger tips? Those won't even be consitered shorts they would be more like pants. Plus how would you even wear those in summer time!! I have had enough with this stuff i mean come on!! Isn't that a bit too far??! Someone could get a heat stroke. You can't even make an summer outfit with long shorts anyway! Who wants to feel the heat and get burnt in the sun i offically wont! i mean very very short shorts yeah thats too far. School these days can get on my nerves. Whats the next thing not having any hair? Who thinks that sometimes school has some really dumb rules.

by Anonymous 7 years ago

Cause this person is right! It's summer! Why woulden't we have short well shorts! if its long and all its not even shorts itself it would be pants like what the? Some people only have bootie shorts. Some schools should be ashamed of themselves! School dress codes can go too far!!!!
