+591 How the hell did Avatar overtake Titanic as the highest-grossing film of all time? Titanic was so much better than Avatar, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Because they charge more for movie tickets now-a-days. :) Apparently if you averaged the number of tickets sold amongst the population, Titanic was more popular.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

True that! Wow, if Titanic was released in 1997, when movie tickets must have obviously been a lot cheaper than they are today, then it really shows how successful Titanic was.

Avatar sold about 75 million tickets in the US and Canada. Titanic sold about 120 million tickets. Titanic is the first and only movie to sell more than 100 million tickets since the 1970s.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes, but that's not saying much.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Also, Avatar was in 3D so it gained even more of a profit.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Avatar was good but 10x more forgettable.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i was disappointed, seeing as how titanic is my favorite movie, but its the same director so its alright :)

Avatar: Pocahontas in space. Everyone knows it, and yet people went to see it anyway....even I did....not worth my time, or money.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No it's Pocahontas with smurfs.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well, tickets for avatar was A LOT more expensive than titanic,if you put the same price and compare sells, titanic still manages to out-perform Avatar.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's called inflation.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I've seen Titanic at least 20 times and it never gets old... and I still cry at the end every time :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

About how much were tickets in '97??

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's all cause of inflation. If you adjust for inflation, titanic makes more.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm sorry, I just can't resist showing this http://www.nosomosperfectos.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/titanic2.jpg

by Anonymous 13 years ago

they both sucked

by Anonymous 13 years ago

James Cameron topped himself... Titanic's impossible to beat if you adjust for inflation, though.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Titanic!<3 I can't believe I used to hate this movie... D:

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Avatar is my marching band show this year<3 it has an amazing soundtrack!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well Avatar might have only sold 75 million tickets in North America, but including the whole world it has made more money than The Titanic. Anyway Avatar wasn't a hit because of the plot, it was purely because of the revolutionary effects and the 15 years of works. Whereas The Titanic is amazing because of acting, screenplay, and plot altogether.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

If adjusted for inflation, Gone With the Wind is the highest grossing film ever, but very few people realize that.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I've only seen most of Titanic and what I've seen of it it's really cheesy. And they talk about "love" when they've only known each other a few days. which makes its biggest selling points lost on me

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Romeo and Juliet only knew one another for a couple of days and no one's going to argue THAT wasn't love.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Agreed. It's just a movie anyway, who cares if they only knew each other for a few days. It's a great movie and that's really all that matters.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

With Romeo and Juliet, at least for me, it's not that I think they're in love, it's how it all happens, how Shakespeare writes. And all the dirty jokes. I agree, it's just a movie so it doesn't really matter but I guess it's just not something I'll ever really like. Oh well.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's fair enough, everyone has different opinions on both Romeo & Juliet and Titanic, I guess you just aren't a hopeless romantic like myself haha

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I kind of am, except the people have to be given enough time together to fall in love like Pride & Prejudice or You've Got Mail
