Not really. Back then, technology and transportation was not nearly as advanced as it is today. Today you can jump on a plane in America and be to Spain in less than a day. Riding a wind powered ship with very little map-related skills would take a lot longer, especially if you think the land you live in is all there is.

Well, it took so long for the Europeans to find it. They couldn't imagine beyond their own continent. But mankind also once believed in the geocentric theory. TL;Dr, humans are mostly stupid.
