+274 Whether or not you agree with Prop 8, it's kind of scary to know that 4 judges overruled 4 million voters, amirite?

Actually it was only one guy. And SEVEN million people voted "yes" on it. That's the only reason I hate California, The DAMN SCREWED UP JUSTICE SYSTEM! Our school did some sort of program where they hold a DUI sentencing at a school. The guy was a repeat offender, and he got like 3 days and a $300 fine. It was ridiculous!!!

California is the most messed up state in the United States. Their debt is through the roof, an unbelievably high cost of living, the taxes on small businesses are ridiculously high, and they can't even give people money for their tax returns, they had to give IOU's because they have no money.

Other than that, though, It's nice. I mean, we have Kobe Bryant. What more can you ask for? :D

The whole of America is in debt, and the reason the govt was going to shut down was because they couldn't decide how much to cut their spending?? ... I'm not from America so I only hear things on the Internet.

Yeah, the Federal Government is in a whole lot of debt. But we're staying afloat, because China can't afford to bankrupt us.... But California's debt has gotten so bad that the Federal Government has contemplated bailing them out.

California has the 7th strongest economy in the world and the U.S. has the strongest followed by China, but it's not close. The U.S. has an economy thats three times larger than China. (I can't cite this with a link because it comes from an Economy teacher at my school.) and the reason Prop 8 was overruled was because it was unconstitutional and one judge started the process it had to be evaluated by a panel of Circuit Judges in the process. The Full Faith and Credit Clause (if I remember correctly, please correct me if I'm wrong) doesn't allow you to deny opportunity to people that are allowed to others based on gender, race, sexuality, or religion.

It isn't that frightening considering the fact that the legalization of marijuana is supported by much more than 4 million people and it still isn't legal. Another note: it doesn't really matter if one judge was gay. The other three were straight (I'm assuming) and they voted that it was unconstitutional as well.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It wouldn't matter if ALL of the judges were gay. It only takes a person capable of thinking for themselves to realize that allowing the government to tell two consenting adults what they can and can't do with their own lives is unacceptable.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's why I made that point. People above me were commenting about how the last guy who voted was gay and how that swayed the vote, but I was saying how it didn't matter.

" it doesn't really matter if one judge was gay. The other three were straight (I'm assuming) and they voted that it was unconstitutional as well" That kind of implied to me otherwise. Sorry if I misunderstood.

Well actually that is the reason judges exist...so the majority can't discriminate against the minority. You should be proud that the judicial system didn't cowardly bow to the hateful masses who wanted to vote prop 8 in, and instead fought for civil rights.

It kind of is, but the job of the people was to vote by their opinion, and the judges by the consitution, not whether or not they personally agreed. I guess we can't really know whether or not they ignored their own bias, but...
