+252 When kids in China and Germany don't learn about their country's bad history, how will they know not to do the same thing, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Kids in Germany do learn about it, don't they? China seems generally messed up.....

by Anonymous 14 years ago

No, it is practically a felony to talk about Hitler...sad isn't it?

by Anonymous 14 years ago

i am from germany, and we learn about it... and we're so damn ashamed. honestly, i would kill hitler if i had the chance, and i feel so sorry for all the people who died :( we know what happened, we saw the places and we don't agree!

by Anonymous 14 years ago

This comment is great until you look at your anon-name. Just sayin'.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well, I have some good news for you at least. Hitler already has died! :)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I heard that the tiananmen square (I don't know how to spell that) videos are blocked on youtube in China.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Along with most of the rest of the Internet.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

China bans just about everything on the internet, anyway. Facebook isn't even allowed in most of mainland China.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

they do in Germany... and I think the whole developed world has done some #$#$%ed up stuff as far as abusing human rights go

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Agreed. In America we spend the first two weeks of every history class being told what asshats we were about slavery. Every country has done shitty things.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Don't censor words on this website.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

don't censor my right to use random symbols as words!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Same with America, look what we did to the American Indians.... how much do you learn about it? like a paragraph in your history book, I imagine its the same for Germany and the holocaust.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm not sure about other people, but we went over the Native American suppression in quite a bit of detail. I s'pose it depends on the teacher, but every one that I've had has expressed the opinion that it was wrong. And I think that's what this post is saying. Do the kids in Germany and China even learn about their history? Do they discuss the wrongdoings? It may be outright banned.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

We spent about a month on the native americans, but it might be different other places because my town is right next to a reservation and a third of the students are native.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

alright, then what did you learn, what did we DO to the american indians? if you learned in such detail other then "we took their land and relocated them."

by Anonymous 12 years ago

...You want me to give you a history lesson? hehe I mean, I will if you really want me to. You might want to enroll for an English lesson as well.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Do you see my profile picture, does it LOOK like i want an English lesson?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I dunno, man. I thought I could throw in one free with the history lesson you asked for.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

go for it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think Germany has done a very good job turning around - as someone from Germany confirmed in the comments. China, I dunno, they still have some censorship / freedom of speech issues...

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah, I do think Germany is a bit less...locked-down on information than China is. I have heard that there's a number of Germans who outright deny that their country ever did that, but you get people in America who still don't believe that the Holocaust happened as well.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Last I heard, it's a crime in Germany to deny that the Holocaust happened.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah, but it still happens. Someone I know went to Germany and stayed with a German couple who absolutely refused to acknowledge that the Holocaust occured. Which I suppose isn't really denying it, just ignoring it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I know it still happens, but people aren't allowed to be outspoken about it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I learned a lot more about the Indian's than a paragraph. . .

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You must be joking. First off, what we did to the Native Americans was horrible and inexcusable, and it we certainly learn much, much more than a paragraph about it. But that simply doesn't compare to what Germany did during the first and especially second world war. For the record, German education does not skimp over details on the Holocaust, if anything they are more gruesome and harsh about it because they are so ashamed.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well obviously, you are an American citizen, so you'd have no idea about that. So first off, why should you comment on that? and second we wiped out an entire nation bigger than Europe. I'm pretty sure that's worse than the holocaust.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

and it wasn't the German people partaking in this, they had no idea how blown out of proportion it was going to become. And if you ever go to school abroad in other countries, nations always never focus on their faults. that was my point. SO SHUT UP WITH YOUR POMPOUS ASSHOLE ATTITUDE. You obviously do NOT know anything.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well aren't you just a big fucking ignorant prick. There were 12 million people killed in the Holocaust alone, not to mention the deaths in the first and second world wars. This isn't even accounting for the major economic downswing after the first world war and the absolute annihilation of Europe after the second. While I won't completely fault the German people for everything that happened, they did play a large role in the Holocaust happening by either siding with the Nazis or simply looking the other way. And how would YOU know countries "always never" focus on their faults, something completely untrue. I'm basing what I said about Germany not covering it up on the fact tha my AP Euro teacher, who is German, had told us that Germany did not skimp on the details because he went to school in Germany and has no reason to lie. Also, my grandfather is German and has told me stories about how after the war nothing was covered up. So shut the fuck up before you say shit about things you know nothing about.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Take your own advice, you've probably never even left the country. I fought back with you about this because I thought you worth arguing with, but obviously your some 12-13 year old brat sitting on the comp because none of your peers like you. Go get laid.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Obviously I won because you have resorted to petty insults and a pathetic argument of no substance, based on false assumptions and inaccuracies. By calling me a "12 year old" and being lazy enough to not respond to a well thought out argument, you've done nothing but prove your ignorance in a horribly terrible act to stroke your ego. You were just being a dick when you attacked me unprovoked, there was nor has been anything civil about any of your arguments. Again, I'll chalk this up as a win seeing as how you have provided absolutely no evidence for your unfounded claims about both my supposed ignorance and wrongdoings in history.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Get some glasses, because obviously you did not read my statements. and I decided to quit because you were repetitive in your opposition that clearly showed you are a closed minded idiot.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No I read them, you just can't form a cohesive argument so I win.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Read "A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn. It goes into detail about the genocide of the Arawoks. (Not mass-murder, but full-on genocide.)

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm pretty sure there have been other countries that have done wrong in the past. American settlers did horrible things to the Native Americans. Joseph Stalin was responsible for millions of deaths in the Soviet Union. Spain has the Spanish Inquisition. It's why we have history classes in school. We all need to learn from the mistakes of the past so that they're not repeated in the future. Besides, who says that the next Hitler would be German? He/She could be Canadian, for all we know.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

hahahaha, Canadian Hitler? Funny.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Or even American. :P

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Children in Germany do learn about their history, probably more in detail than other countries learn about the German history. I also don't understand why Germany and China are the only countries listed here, like Stepharoo said, there are tons of other countries with messed up, brutal histories.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Most Americans don't know about Colombus's genocide of the Arawoks, which some historians claim to have as many victims as the Holocaust.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Germany does as mentioned above, but China is because of the government. But you can't really use Stalin as an example because his atrocities were against his own people, and the Russian people basically get no so in their leader, well until Putin dies. Gotta love the Commies! BTW I still love Russia so dont get mad Rusi!

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The people killed in the Holocaust were Germans and Poles and whatnot, too. Judiasm is a religion, not a race. And people who were handicapped and homosexual (and anyone else Hitler thought was sub-human) were killed as well. Were those not "his own people"? And Russian people have elections. It hasn't be a communist country for about 20 years. Putin could be voted out of office if the people of Russia wanted him out of office.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I get what you're saying but I just feel like Hitler was out for genocide for the people he didn't think were good enough to live in his new world, but Stalin killed 20 million Russians mostly through starvation and working them to death to bring Russia up to date with the rest of the world. He created a strong Russia, economically, but tore the people apart. They even had to resort to cannibalism, and to report on their own family members if they tried to eat some of the crops they were producing and selling for money. However they both killed people who opposed them politically. But for the last part I'd have to say you're wrong. As much as I love Russia and being a russophile, Putin controls it all. Medvedev is just a puppet, Putin's been in power since 2000 whether he's the official president or not.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Stalin also had people killed when he thought they threatened his regime. But 20 million deaths in Russia is still 20 million deaths, no matter what the reasons behind them were. Those deaths are just as bad as the ones in Germany around the same time.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah I know I said they both killed people who opposed them politically, but I'm just saying I don't think they're the same. As my first comment implied I don't think Stalin can be used as an example for the post because it's not something that would be weird to learn about at school because it was their leader who forced all of his people, except for the butt-kissing rich ones, to work to their death, or go fight for the Red Army, which was basically a death sentence. The Red Army soldiers who got captured and escaped couldn't even return to Russia because Stalin automatically labeled them as traitors. While Hitler had his people working for him as well, he didn't kill a mass majority of his countries population to get his goal, he killed a mass majority of Europes! Lol, they're both horrible but the Russians don't have anything to make it an awkward situation when they learn about Stalin's atrocities.
