+348 Why is it socially acceptable to tell a smoker that they're killing themselves and to stop... But not to tell an obese person the same thing? amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

sorry but this is a repost..i still agree with you though :)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Just beause they stop eating unhealthy food or start eating less. Weight loss doesn't come as easy as it does to stop smoking.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Losing weight is just hard work, and habit changes. Though stopping smoking is similar but so much harder because you are ADDICTED to a substance and without it your body will freak out.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's just it you can quit. I know so many people out there that haw quit smoking. You can change your eating habits and still not loose the weight whether it be from a thyroid disorder or an inability to work out like with asthma and weight loss surgery is expensive. To quit smoking you just quit, you don't have to work beyond that. With weight loss you have to quit eating and change your habits then work beyond that.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

well yeah some people do have underlying problems to their weight, but there are people out there that do exist, who have brought their weight entirely on themselves. You do have to work beyond just quitting smoking, maybe not if you didnt smoke for very long, but if you smoke for years and years-once you have quit you still get cravings and every social interaction where someone else is smoking is a struggle for you..

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Maybe it would be easier to loose weight if people didn't have to actually eat ya know. It's easier to quit smoking if you completely stop rather than smoke one a day, but people have to eat.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I agree with this. Food is everywhere and everyone faces it usually 3X a day.. Smokers don't see, or have to smoke, 3 cigarettes a day.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

@637804 (mchristie): Yes you have to eat, but it all matters WHAT you are eating. So much of our food is processed and full of bs, its practically not even real food. A person can make an effort to eat food that isnt so fake. Another thing here in america is that portions in restaurants are so fucking big, and people expect that. If restaurants served healthy portions people would bitch about it, cus its the american way i guess. A person that smokes ciggs (and legitimately addicted), probably smokes way more than 3 a day. Most people smoke close to a pack a day (about 20 ciggs)

Also, I will add that I have seen people LOSE 10 pounds just from quitting drinking pop. Pop is so fucking bad for you and your teeth, and people here actually use it as a means of hydration which is gross. Its pretty easy if someone who drinks a lot of pop, just cuts out the pop.

You're right, they see it 50 times a day, especially on campus it seems everyone is smoking. @518770 (Marki): http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,967523,00.html Besides I know plenty of people who have managed to lose a lot of weight and actually become healthy for once.... I go to the gym a lot and I see people who seem like they don't belong there, but some of them I see every time I go, with a consistent exercising pattern and I have to say, they work out harder than me (and I've had military training) and the amount of weight they've lost is visible. It's all about the drive

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well good for them, I know a lot of that work out everyday and manage to maybe lose ten pounds a year. Personally I'm not overweight due to a thyroid condition, but if I was then I wouldn't be able to work out because of several medical conditions.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Meh you could be right I suppose. The people I see probably (just guessing) change every aspect of their lives. Which would include eating less, eating healthy, and spending freetime outside instead of indoors. And if you're majoring in biology then I'm just going to assume you know what you're talking about and accept it as truth

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Weight loss can be quite easy, depending on if you do it right, and are willing to stick to it for long enough. It's quite similar with smoking, really. Except smokers actually have a legitimate reason to find it exceedingly difficult to stop, because they have a chemical dependency on nicotine... (Although fat people do sometimes end up that way because of a similar addiction to food)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Unless you take diet pills or do something extreme that isn't necessarily healthy for your body weight loss isn't easy...you can quit smoking in a month but you're lucky if you loose 5-10lbs in a month. If you're 100lbs over weight it doesn't exactly compute to easy weight loss.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Actually, the more overweight you are, the easier the weight comes off. (So I've heard/read, anyway)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It does. Your body burns more calories because it's physically bigger and exerts more energy dragging a fat ass around. The physical part is easy.. It's just the psychological aspect that's hard to overcome for them

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well she has loosed my attention! Although that may just be because she's a girl.... @519126 (Marki): What are you in college for, that you have no need for proper spelling? Because I too am in college and I needed proper spelling in almost all my classes

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm a biology major, the only class I've had where spelling was remotely important was one of my English classes and it wasn't considered as important as correct information an actual grammar. What's your major again?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm majoring at being awesome, shyea!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's not true ^ in combination with excercise and heathy eating you can do it. And quitting smoking is hard. They both are lifestyle changes.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I made a similar post yesterday

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Is there some kind of war going on between obesity and smoking, today? 'Cause there's loads of posts comparing them...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Obesity may be hereditary in which case it's harder to loose weight than quit smoking.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

How often is obesity an issue because of genetics or other legitimate health issues? If it is you can still control it, I have a few friends who do but they control it just as well as anybody else controls their weight. Most of the time it's people eating crap and not getting off their ass.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

And standing next to a fat person won't give you second hand fat...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah i read a post about that

by Anonymous 13 years ago

my reasoning being, if you gain a ton of weight, that really won't hurt anyone else. But loads of my mom's friends or their parents have died from secondhand smoking.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Let the damn people smoke! I hate stupid yuppies that are all anti -tobacco. People know it's not good for health, but there are so many other things bad for health too. Just leave it alone, it's a free country!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Marki, just wow. Who gives a shit what your major is, I'm in college too but that doesn't mean I assume I know everything about an addiction as serious as nicotine and how hard it is to beat that addiction. Quitting cold turkey is proven to be the hardest method of quitting because it's a PHYSICAL addiction. & Oh wow, you're a bio major, wait until you take organic chem and let that experience humble you since you seem to lack humility.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

well unless the obese person is actually healthy... they can be considered "obese" but if it is caused by a disorder then if they still eat healthy things they aren't really "killing themselves"

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't get it either but then again I would probably say something to the obese person. I'm aware that part of the problem of obesity is genetics but its not the entire problem. People today who are overweight think that they can take a pill they see on tv and it will magically cause them to lose weight. I call bullshit everytime i see those. Its called diet and exercise America, give it a try.
