Harlequin-type ichthyosis!
by Anonymous13 years ago
I looked it up on wiki first, and it's actually very sad for those plagued with it. The faint of heart definitely should not look up images, though.
by Anonymous13 years ago
What is it about?
by Anonymous13 years ago
It's a very severe skin disorder that affects infants from the womb and usually kills them shortly thereafter. The skin has very high amounts of keratin and is dry and cracked. The affected person's skin cracks and has diamond-shaped scales over it, hence "harlequin" which is like the pattern clowns and jesters used to wear. At places where the skin creases, there are open wounds which can get infected. The images are very graphic because they show a whole bunch of babies that almost look like something out of a gory horror film. I felt a little sick even though I watch a lot of medical/disease stuff.
by Anonymous13 years ago
Oh dear. So most victims (for lack of better term) die as infants?
by Anonymous13 years ago
Yeah, but I think the oldest sufferer lived to be 26.
by Anonymous13 years ago
Age of death kinda reminds me of progeria for some odd reason.
by Anonymous13 years ago
Yeah, I saw a couple of images that reminded me of progeria (those were of harlequin survivors that were probably being treated with drugs, though). Progeria suddenly "seems" like a mild disease in comparison to harlequin-type. It is much easier to look at in my opinion. I remember seeing some kind of documentary on it a while back, and I had no trouble watching it.
by Anonymous13 years ago
I didn't even know diseases like this existed until recently. Its kind of sad, isn't it?
by Anonymous13 years ago
It is very sad. I used to watch Discovery Health and TLC a lot, so you see so many of these disorders and diseases. Even though it's sad, in a way I like learning about these things so that I'm aware. A lot of the time it is inspirational because the children are still happy to be alive, and they want to share their story.
by Anonymous13 years ago
I think those kids are really strong to be able bro endure something like that, because many people out there wouldn't be able to withstand that.
by Anonymous13 years ago
I totally agree. If you look up harlequin ichthyosis on Google, a video comes up of this 14 year old girl with the disorder. It's a little graphic in some parts, but very inspirational.
by Anonymous13 years ago
Im way too scared. I cannot really handle things like that. But with this disorder, can people like wash their face, or use lotion or something like that?
by Anonymous13 years ago
Haha, I don't blame you. They have to drink tons of water, and when they take baths, they don't fully dry off. They have to use this really thick moisturizer and special shampoos. Putting on the moisturizer has to be done almost constantly, and it has a greasy consistency.
by Anonymous13 years ago
Ugh. I would absolutely hate that. So does the girl get teased for her disorder?
by Anonymous13 years ago
She does teased. People are cruel. Whenever a stranger teases her, though, she gives them a card explaining her disease. She has two friends, but they are some of the first friends she has ever had. She goes to a ichthyosis convention every two years, and she has some friends there. She plays violin and is active in her church though, so I don't think she's letting the disease hold her back.
by Anonymous13 years ago
That's great! But to play violin you need to hold the thing in your face, so is that much of a problem for her? And that's an amazing way to handle the hate she gets for it.
by Anonymous13 years ago
It actually didn't see like a problem in the video, and she didn't say anything about it. I think her whole story is amazing.
by Anonymous13 years ago
i would only be able to watch that with somebody. If I watched it in school, I would be less scared than if I watched it by myself.
by Anonymous13 years ago
Like I said I don't blame you. I didn't think the video was that bad, but at least you seem interested in the disease like I am.
by Anonymous13 years ago
Were taking up a lot of space and our comments are unrelated to the post
Can you message me instead?
by Anonymous13 years ago
How am I supposed to agree or disagree if I don't look it up?!?!?!
by Anonymous13 years ago
well it's not an opinion so there's really no way to agree or disagree..
by Anonymous13 years ago
I did, but then I typed in "spider bites piercings" then it was all good. I'm still traumatized
