+435 What do you call someone who only speaks one language? American. Amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm American and I agree with this lol. The other day my teacher was talking about how in almost any other country we would be starting our forth language.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm a freshman in HS btw

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I think I'm freshman, too (we have different grades here in Santa Claus Land) and I have Finnish (obvs), English, French and Swedish, and I would have started German as an elective last year but there wasn't enough people -_-

by Anonymous 13 years ago

HEY! THAT'S..true. :X

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Lol.. I must agree with that one.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

lolol, even though they have free access to at least two european languages in high school

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I speak two languages. And I guarantee their is other people out of America that only speak one language.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Take a joke, huh? Also, as a budding philologist/linguist, which languages do you speak? English and...? Because I speak Finnish, English, Swedish and French. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Spanish. Don't assume I'm an expert, because I'm not. I'm just saying I could manage. That's awesome for you to speak that many languages, there isn't a need for me to know that many. I plan on living in America for the rest of my life, and we speak English here.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Two? Now is that including English? Not very well then. (THERE, not their)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I was in a hurry. SO SORRY. Not.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

*there are? you don't sound like you speak english too well

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Sorry ass face, I was in a hurry when I was typing that. Learn to capitalize some letters.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm American. Where I went to high school, we were required to learn at least one other language. Also, because there are so many people here who are immigrants, being bilingual makes it easier to get a job.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yeah but you get max. 4 years of the language, and after that most students don't ever practice it again making it pointless, and just credits.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Actually, we were required to have at least two years, and it was possible to have up to six years of a single language. Obviously, a lot of kids don't take it seriously, but that's not to say some don't

by Anonymous 13 years ago

sorry, but you must've missed my whole comment. you get max 4 years = high school is only FOUR YEARS, you can't possibly have more than 4 years of language in high school, i said nothing about the minimum obviously, i already said most kids dont take it seriously, that's why i said "MOST STUDENTS DONT EVER PRACTICE IT AGAIN" i had never said anything about the 7 people who do study after high school

by Anonymous 13 years ago

False. I'm American and speak 4 languages fluently: English, Spanish, German, Russian. But yeah, there are many people in other countries as well who only speak one language.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Not anyone who went to school.I started english in 2nd grade and french in 3rd or 4th grade(not sure).

by Anonymous 13 years ago

но конечно ОП не имел в виду всех Американцов, он преумножил чтобы поняли смысл

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm American and I just want to say that we Americans can TOO speak multiple languages: English, Pig Latin, Gibberish, and there are a few of us who speak Caveman!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

also, the majority of us speak 'text'.

I'm American but I live in a third world country and am learning my third language. I know a ton of others but not fluently but if I went to certain contries (either for the first time or the second time) I would be able to cmmunicate easily(Finland, China, Egypt, Turkey, Russia, Mexico/Spain, India, Germany, Austria, Korea etc. etc.) because all of my friends speak their own language to other people that speak it and you can pick up on it easily if you try. Most people out of America(or at least everywhere I've been) speak two languages by the time they finish elementry school.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Finland? Really? You speak Finnish? That's awesome.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Which country? I live in Senegal, and I speak 2 languages fluently, undertand a third and bits of a fourth and all my friends speak more

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I live in Kyrgyzstan and that's how it is with me. I understand more languages then I can speak haha

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm american and in 9th grade. I can speak in two languages.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

1-3 years of language classes dont count, he meant fluently

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm American, and although I agree with this, it's not always true in all cases. The thing is that you need to take initiative and want to learn the language. There's less of a push to learn different languages, which is very sad. For example, I know a a passable amount of German, French and ASL (that counts, right?), and I'm growing to be fluent in Latin, but that's a dead language so I'm not sure if that counts. Including the fact that I'm very articulate with English words, I'd say that pretty good for an American. I also have a friend who practically collects languages. She speaks French, German, Greek, Danish, Latin, Russian... oh, and English. :P

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I speak 5 languages... Oh yeah, I'm not American.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm American and I speak Spanish. Im a HS freshman and I've been studying spanish for 6 years. I also want to learn German, Japanese, and ASL

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I only speak two... but I'm 14 so I have plenty time to learn. ^^ English x Japanese!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Maybe the older generation... but not the younger generation. I speak English and German.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm from the US and this is pretty funny. Its sad too though. I really wish that we had to learn more languages here...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Haha this is so true... I'm American and I know French and Spanish... But people slack through their language courses cause it's required... So sad But funny post

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I agree with the posts above me. I'm American and speak English and Spanish but I have so many languages I want to learn. I'm working on German and ASL now and eventually would like to get to Russian, Italian, and then French.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Lol so true. I wish that we were all required to learn a language in school from the start. Picking up a new language is so much easier when you're younger.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I speak 3 languages. English, Spanish, and American Sign Language. I want to learn French and German really bad. Russian would be cool too.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

in england we learn other languages in school, like compulsory, until we start studying for exams. Like I learned some spanish, french and german...but im doing german for an actual exam now and dropped the other subjects =) but we still can speak some of it...as well as english

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I am American and I speak two, but I agree that most Americans don't. I think they should start teaching language to children earlier.
