I agree, but I think Charlaine Harris did a good job with the Sookie books. She kept a lot of the traditional aspects of vampires but put them into a new scenario where they are fighting for equal rights as humans. The show/books are also brutal, bloody, and sexual-the way vamps should be.

The only thing that is still the same is the whole blood-drinking shenanigans. And even that got watered down.
