"Hey, my kid doesn't always listen to me! It must mean he needs medications!"

"GASP! My kid isn't doing well in school! It can't have anything to do with me not being home at all, so it must be ADD"

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I have ADD, and none of the reasons given yet explain my diagnosis. I have loving and involved parents, and do rather well in most of my school work. The trouble is concentrating on the uninteresting things.

Nobody can concentrate on uninteresting things. That's why they're called "uninteresting". You dont need medication.

ADD is often misdiagnosed, i was diagnosed with ADD but my parents refused treatment now i'm fine and with better focus than most people, REAL ADD is very hard to deal with but a kid who is diagnosed with ADD then when he grows up stops needing meds/treatment (as the great majority do) then it wasn't ADD thats what the post and comments are talking about. And ADD patients have trouble focusing on everything not just "uninteresting" things.

It's called teaching as well; I don't like to speak ill of teachers, but the more I meet lately the more convinced I am that they're just getting lazy. My son is gifted, and his first and second grade teachers actually complained that he couldn't just sit still and perfectly quiet after he was done with his work- that rarely ever took him more than 5 minutes. He got sent to the office for things like playing with his pencils or "fidgeting". I know when I was in grammar school, it took actually doing something wrong to get sent to the principal. One of them actually had the audacity to straight up suggest medication... the other merely suggested "outside counselling". I nearly came unglued all over the former; I wanted to ask her if she had a fucking medical degree, y'know? Anyway, it just seems like all they want is a class full of medicated little zombie children that require no effort, because my kid has always been well-behaved both at home and other places, except school- ...

... this year is the first year they offer gifted classes(3rd grade) in his district, and he's already been tested and placed. Guess what...? No more discipline problems. It just takes more than reading out of a book and doing the worksheet at the end every day to keep gifted children engaged and interested. It's sad how many of those little kids on Ritalin or whatever are probably gifted too, and having their potential squandered by lazy teachers and parents.

I was in those classes.. :)

Yes yes your son is perfect and amazing.

It's only bad parenting if they're diagnosed very young, like in grade school. I was diagnosed in high school because I couldn't stay focused long enough to learn anything. Side note: ADD does Not equal ADHD. completely different.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Actually it isn't usally bad parenting if itis diagnosed at a young age. My brother was diagnosed at age 4 and at age 22 he still has to take the meds. ADD is not completely different from ADHD they are very close with just some differences.

I have ADD. It has nothing to do with my parents.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oh, let's be snarky when someone tells a relevant personal story to make a point. Fuck off, trolling loser.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

ok, i have ADD and all those people who made comments about how ADD is fake, you all have no idea what your talking about because you obviously don't know what ADD is or what it's like!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I think what they're saying is that there are parents who use ADD as an excuse for their absent parenting. There are definitely people with ADD but there are also kids who their parents say they have ADD so that they can suck at parenting

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Not saying ADD doesn't exist. It's just that too many children who don't have ADD or ADHD are now being medicated because their parents don't want to deal with children who don't pay attention sometimes or don't like to sit still. Also, way too many people are saying they have ADD or ADHD when they're a little hyper or bored and not paying attention. I know someone who actually does have ADHD, and even on medication, she's got more symptoms than the children whose parents and teachers claim they have it because they're not paying attention.
