Well, yes, losing attraction and attachment to someone is gradual. When you start feeling that growing disconnect, however, you disassociate yourself from those thoughts because you are unwilling to accept that fact. So even as our attraction and attachment towards someone erodes, we aren't fully conscious of that fact until we get to the point where it is plainly obvious to us. Now that we are fully aware of our disinterest, we are afraid to express that towards the person, so keep it hidden. That's why it will come as a shock to you when the truth finally surfaces.
