+212 It must be pretty bleak to give birth to a child with a defect. Imagine - you're so excited to watch them grow and blossom, to have amazing conversations, go on holidays, first day of school, prom, weddings etc...and then they come out retarded or something. You would feel disappointed, amirite?

"Retarded or something" doesn't sound very PC. hehe

I wish there was a "kind of" button for this post. Although I would be sad, and disappointed to give birth to a child with birth defects, because of the fact that every parent wants their child to be healthy and happy; I would still LOVE that child unconditionally and be supportive of them in everything they go through and be proud to be their parent nonetheless.

I understand the sentiment but, coming from someone with a sibling with down syndrome, you worded this so insensitively

by Anonymous 11 years ago

And for then record we go on holidays 3 times a year, she has been to the prom, graduated high school, and we have fun conversations about pop culture and her favorite singers etc... It's not the end of the world

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Well no, it's not the end of the world. But there are a lot of things out there that are a lot worse than down syndrome to where the kid can't talk, they can't be involved in school, their medical treatments cost so much you can't afford vacation, etc.

There's a good green day lyric that this reminds me of this post: "Am I retarded or am I just overjoyed?" I mean, a kid like that always seems happy, and thrilled at the simplest things. Sure, it's not raising a normal kid, but it's still a new experience.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

"a kid like that always seems happy"...no, no they don't.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I would, but that's pretty mean because it's happened many times before

Hello there. Amirite's resident disabled person speaking. My service dog has advised met to take deep breaths and my lawyer has recommended I not incriminate myself in any future murders that may or may not take place, but suffice it to say I am typing this with my middle finger.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Aren't you the user the debilitating peanut allergy?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

What do you use a service dog for? Aren't they normally used by blind people? Sorry if this seems rude, I'm just genuinely curious

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Probably to sniff out the peanut in the air and alert her owner... Just a guess

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Service dogs help many disabled people, not just the blind. Look up the dog "Endal" on Wikipedia - he was incredible!

by Anonymous 11 years ago

If you want to know about her service dog just go to her blog, you don't need to ask in the comments. The link is right on her userpage

I think I would have YYA'd if you hadn't said "retarded or something." Like monika13 said, you sound really insensitive because of that. I understand what your coming from, and what you're trying to say, but those three literally ruined the post...

by Anonymous 11 years ago

where you're coming from* those three words*

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I would've aborted long before then.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Of course I would be terribly upset, but not for the selfish reasons in the post. I wouldn't look at it as me losing out on opportunities to see my child grow up, I would be sad for them that they wouldn't get to experience those things.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I agree that "retarded or something" wasn't the most tactful way of putting it. But I still agree with what the post is saying. It's blunt and to the point. We need a bit more of that in the world.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I thought you were talking about a disease like progeria or tay-sachs where the child dies much too young to experience those things.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Now that I think about it, I'm sure me and my sister may have been a little disappointing. Though in completely different ways. The thing is though, even if a kid is born with a defect, that doesn't mean that can't do all that stuff. If they're really, really sick, then maybe not, I don't know. But retarded or something? Really?

by Anonymous 11 years ago

"Retarded" is an actual medical term often used to describe the kind of things OP is referring to...or at least it used to be until people started freaking out about it for no reason, now doctors avoid using it when possible.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

Right, but those two words "or something" imply to me that OP didn't mean it in the medical sense.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

I love this post, because it's blunt, honest, and doesn't beat around the bush.

by Anonymous 11 years ago

People who are disliking this post because it is so blunt will always exist in this world. They're the ones who are actually afraid that people will get too offended. In my opinion, sometimes we need more bluntness like this because we get too scared of offending people.
