+220 Most of the stuff that the US is famous for was because they were trying to one-up another country, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Being an American myself, I must say that's our main form of motivation. That, and food.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No, not really...Our fame and number one world power status come from the first two World Wars. We weren't trying to "one-up" another country, we were kind of swooping in to save the day. I assume that your post is referring to the Cold War, and yeah, we did try to one-up the Soviet Union. But that alone is not what made the US famous.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah, what the other guy said. "The Nazis are building a nuke?? Oh shit, we better build one too, and faster!" Granted, in this case, it was more a will to survive than wanting to outdo someone else, but yeah.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

...what? the Nazis didn't build nukes...the Japanese did. Sorry if I'm being a History Nazi, thats just how i am

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well, neither of them built nukes before the Americans, but yeah, both Japan and Germany pursued nuclear weaponry. I chose the Nazis because it's more common knowledge.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

How is it more common knowledge? The Germans didn't pursue nuclear weaponry during World War 2, and if they did, very little is known about it. It most certainly is not "common knowledge". The Japanese, on the other hand, are most closely associated with nuclear weaponry as the US did nuke them. The closest competitors in the nuclear weapons race was the USSR, of course, but that came after WW2 All that being said, I like your prof pic.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Good job. they discovered fission. But they didn't do anything with it, so no one cares. Anyway, it's stupid to argue about a nuance.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Imagine that guy that has to one up everybody, he's such a dueshbag. well that's us.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Actually I think most of the stuff we're famous (probably infamous) for is getting too involved in other countries. We try to be the world's police man. That's why so many people hate us. We can never mind our own business.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Policemen are good people.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

And people that think otherwise are people that have been caught breaking the law.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Not true. I don't like the police because my mom broke a lamp over my face and they told me "that's parenting" and they took me to a holding cell because I called my mom a cunt and they figured I deserved it.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well there are always the few that represent a group in a negative way. But the majority of cops would not have reacted that way.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Another time, my ex boyfriend drug me down the road going 30 miles an hour and they still didn't do shit. They told me I shouldn't have punched him in the nose when he stopped, so sense I hurt him too, they couldn't do anything. Cops have never been helpful to me, and I'm lucky if they're not complete dicks. So yeah, I hate them.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm not saying there aren't bad cops. Some people have multiple experiences with cops that are corrupt and some people have only amazing experiences with cops (like being rescued from child abuse). It all depends on what personal experiences you happen to have. But it is more common that cops help successfully, instead of creating events like yours. It varies based on the state/town/county you live in also. I'm not telling you that you must love cops and everything they do, I'm merely stating that those are a fraction of the men and women in the profession and you, unfortunately, happen to have encountered some of the horrible ones.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

OK. I'm just telling you I don't like the cops, not because I've gotten in trouble with them, but because they have all been complete dicks.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Okay. I should have said 'most people that think otherwise are people that have been caught breaking the law.'

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's a huge generalization.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

But according to polls, it's statistically correct. At least in 2009 it was. I don't know anymore.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Link? My dad hates cops because they beat him around the head because they thought he was a kid out past curphew. Maybe the cops where you live are different, but the cops here are tatted up skin heads in their 20's who only became cops to abuse the power it gave them.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Like I said before, it varies based on where you live. I don't have a link, it's something I learned in AP Psychology. If I had my database password still I could probably find you the study. I just remember that around 80 percent of people that checked 'strongly disagree' on the question "Cops improve my daily life" answered something like 'they gave me a MIP, I got caught drunk driving, they gave me a silly parking ticket' when asked why.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah I'm pretty sure every gang of racist skin heads decided to become cops here. My ex got his car impounded for going 3 miles over the speed limit because hes half black. They said on the report they found paraphernalia.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well I've been fortunate enough to live in many communities where the police force was genuine and handled situations wonderfully.

y

by Anonymous 12 years ago

What was the reason your mom broke a lamp over your face though? Jw

by Anonymous 12 years ago

She thought I stole $40. Then she said I stole $25. Then she found out she miscounted.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's rough. I'm sorry.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'm not saying they're not, but some countries just don't want/need the help. If we constantly get involved, people will never learn how to handle their own affairs. They'll constantly be awaiting our rescue.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

yeah, and when we don't it's "why doesn't America try to help? they're rich but never bother to help anyone but themselves. They're so selfish."

by Anonymous 12 years ago

That's how it is a lot of places. Spain found a sea route to Asia and got riches, the rest of Europe wanted to find a sea route to Asia and get riches.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Why is any country famous? Pretty much for the same reason.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Basically, and because we were successful in doing so.
