+313 Saying "gay and lesbian" is like saying "dogs and german shepherds," amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I agree that it is a bit silly - obviously lesbians are gay females. However, right from the start of the gay liberation movement (around the late 60s/early 70s in the US) gay men and gay women were sort of separate. It's hard to explain, but gay men and lesbians went to different clubs, met in different places, and were generally separate - obviously this is the same time the women's lib movement was happening, so lesbians had to deal with being a double minority. Nowadays it's more "we're one big community", but in the past it was more divided.

I really don't understand what your point is... people generally think of men when you say gay, so when you're including women you specify, so is this good? Bad? What's the point of this post?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The point was that lesbian means gay, so why call it lesbian and not gay?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I just said that people generally think you're talking about a guy when you say gay... so you specify.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

You just asked what the point of the post was. *shrugs*

by Anonymous 12 years ago

No... I wasn't asking the point of the post. This is also something I said in my first comment... is this good or bad? Is this life changing knowledge? What's the point of pointing out the obvious? My watch is black.

"What's the point of this post?" That's not asking what the point of the post was? This wasn't brought to alot of peoples attention, so this person posted it. Besides, this is an opinion site, they're allowed to post whatever they want. The voters are the ones who choose if it's a good one or not.

What part of this post is an opinion? I mean the analogy they chose to use okay (not an opinion, but a personal preference), but it's just a statement of fact. My penis is big, it's a fact. There's no argument about it, it's not going to start a debate, unless I say something like, "My penis is big, there for it gives women the best orgasm." That would be my opinion and you can say, actually I have a small penis and I think I give women the best orgasm. But pointing out the obvious is just... well pointing out the obvious.

Obviously when they hear "gay" people would automatically think of gay men, but this post is just pointing out that "gay and lesbian" is redundant, because a literal translation would be "gay and gay women" - even though the assumption is that gay only applies to men, just saying "gay" should mean both male and females that are homosexual.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Oh I do realize what people should assume, but you can't say, "You should know this, so I'm going to treat you like you do." If they don't know it and you just say gay, they'll go on for the rest of their lives thinking that only men do/don't whatever you were talking about that day.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah, that's true. I dunno, when I see "gay and lesbian" written somewhere, it's usually at like, a health clinic or club or something, and it probs would have been easier to just put "gay" or "homosexual"; but at the same time, if you buy a gay magazine or something, it's usually understood that gay refers just to men.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Well they have to accommodate for the common man. Although writing, "homosexuals" does seem easier. Not every man out there is as smart as you or as smart as I attempt to be.

Personally, I like to use the word lesbian over gay for women. Not sure why, just sounds better, I guess.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

The word lesbian sounds so.. I don't know.. sleazy.... I prefer saying gay.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't understand why people seem to think that the word gay only applies to men. gay = homosexual

by Anonymous 12 years ago

It's just another way of saying gay men and women.
