they're taking time away from their families and friends and risking their lives to protect their country , and to keep us safe. they don't HAVE to do it , anybody that does that is a hero in my book.

I think OP may be saying like traitors... but yes, probably 99.999% of soldiers are heroes.

I judge a soldier on what he's done in service, just being a soldier alone isn't enough to earn my respect.

There's bad eggs in every group. Some soldiers kill innocent people because they think it's funny. Unfortunately, because our society is so attracted to the negative side of things, this is mostly what we are feed from the news media and that gives a lot of soldiers a bad image when the majority of them don't do unethical things.

The soldiers that executed a family in Iraq in 2006 and Obama and Bush kept it hidden, anybody?

Personally, I think it's an hounorable thing to be in your country's armed forces. You're showing dedication and nationalism. If someone abuses the power, then I lose respect for that person. Otherwise, I do see soldiers as heroes as well as firefighters, doctors and police officers. But once again- abuse of power=loss of respect.

You'd find that most of the time, people joined for the following reasons (starting from the most common):
1. College money
2. To be more profitable to the civilian market (free training in any field)
3. Respect from civilians
4. To blow shit up
Nobody really feels patriotic enough to join anymore. It wouldn't be a smart idea to do so for that reason anyway.
