+226 Why are so many people against tattoos? They're art and expression just like painting or sketching, amirite?

It's sad to see a site that's supposed to be full of young people coming across as so backwards and narrow-minded. Tattoos ARE art, and to judge someone based on them is petty and ignorant.

Exactly, I want to go into tattooing (not because of how they make it look on LA Ink or any of that shiz) because not only is it art, its connecting with other people, getting different views on the world and who lives in it.

This. Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD” (Leviticus 19:28)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

...citing Leviticus never goes over well with other people. (Just for future reference)

So it's safe to assume you don't wear clothes made of two different types of fabric, eat shellfish or pork, or cut your hair?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i dont do anything you listed. many religious people believe that tattoos are marking your body making you impure. it doesn't make you ignorant, it makes you respectful of your body and religion.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I only asked him that because he quoted Leviticus. I know he does all those things and thus is a hypocrite for quoting that verse. It's fine that you respect your body and religion or whatever. You might want to learn respect for capital letters next. Also, tattoos do not automatically mean disrespect for your body.

Permanently marking your flesh with ink is not respectful to your body, but you can have your opinion. You're right about capitalizing but your attitude is unnecessary and doesn't affect me, sorry you got offended.

I wasn't offended. I probably won't even get a tattoo since I'm afraid of needles. Tattoos can be respectful, even if they permanently mark your body. They might not be your thing, but that doesn't make them wrong.

How's Kosher working out, pretty good?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

A lot of people seem to get tattos just because they want people to think theyre cool. I bet half the people would never get a tattoo if no one would EVER see it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The difference is that you can get rid of sketches that express your current thoughts and feelings. That bleeding teddy bear wrapped in barbed wire on your chest might not express how you feel in 40 years, though.

I'm only against tattoos that could potentially be regretful. As long as it's tasteful (naked ladies can be tasteful, btw) it's fine by me.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm not necessarily against tattoos, I'm against the reason why some people get them. If they're meaningful to a person, that's one thing. One girl I know just got a HUGE tattoo just so that she could say that hers was bigger than another girl's. That's just dumb, and it doesn't mean anything.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I like tattoos, but only when they're at least SOMEWHAT tasteful. I totally agree that they are pieces of art, but I really don't like looking at a 9 inch naked she-devil with boobs bigger than my fist on the leg of some guy my child is standing next to. And no, I'm not against nudity in tattoos/art. I just think it should be projected in a more tasteful way.

Art that is on your body for the rest of your life. It is clearly something to judge on, considering your gonna be stuck with it

I know a young woman who is covered in tattoos. Each one represents something that has happened in her life. She has one commemorating a friend who passed away from cancer, one who honors her deceased grandfather, and one for each of her sisters. They were all designed by her and she wears them proudly. After meeting her and learning the stories, I never judged people with tattoos again.

You can't pick and choose which morals/rules of your religion you wish to follow and then look down on others because they don't follow those exact rules. If you do than that would be hypocritical. If you are going to quote the Bible then it also says 'judge not less yee be judged' I'm not sure of its verse. Saying that tattoos make your body impure is also saying lacerations (such as simple piercings) and sex before marriage is also making your body impure, which are not really looked down upon in modern day society. I am a Catholic who sins and I don't believe this is any different than doing anything else to your body such as those.

Sometimes they just look tacky, cheap and distasteful. I don't ever want to ruin my body with a tattoo. Imagine when you're all old and wrinkly with extra skin, it would look really bad and you will probably regret it, It's the same with spacers in your ear.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Exactly! I doubt most people would want the tattoo fifty years later, especially distorted by skin changing/sagging. And the fact that natural, healthy skin is better looking than ink.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i don't think people should get offended by other people's tattos, since it's not your body they're on.. ha.
