-168 Saying that you don't like screamo because you can't understand what they're singing is like saying that you don't like foreigners because you can't understand what they're saying, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i don't see anything wrong with this statement, when foreigners immigrate to a new country, they should learn to properly speak the official languages

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's not as easy as you make it sound. Have you ever tried to learn a new language? All languages are valuable and that logic has destroyed many cultures and languages. Just look at blacks in America they have lost a large part of their African culture because they were enslaved and forced to learn English.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

yes actually I have learned a new language and I am now fluent in French and English. I'm not asking for much, just the ability to hold a conversation that does not require shouting or repeating a word 20 times

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't like screamo because the sound of someone screaming at the top of their lungs just isn't very pleasant.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No it's like saying that you don't like foreign music because you can't understand it, or that you don't like people who scream all the time because you can't understand them.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

it's shit music

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No I just don't see the appeal of being screamed at while I'm trying to enjoy a song.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That isn't why I don't like screamo. Also, I would not buy a CD of people speaking Dutch for 11 tracks.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Maybe some people actually care about the lyrical content of the music they listen to.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Songs have lyrical content whether you can understand it or not.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I actually like foreign music. I just don't enjoy people screaming what are supposed to be words in my ear.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Just going to interject here. There are many different varietys of screamo music, ranging from soft screams which are just more like yelling, to high pitched screams, to death growls. And for the majority of screamo music, the ability and style of the screamer has a huge determination on wether it's easy to understand, or whether you have to listen harder to catch the words. Like if you listen to alesana or escape the fate, it's a lot easier to understand than the devil wears prada or I set my friends on fire.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I agree 100 percent. You're exactly right. And for me, I can understand things like TDWP now, but not when I first started getting into screamo. Just like if you're learning a new language, you start with easy to understand words; you do the same thing with screamo really. Listen to things like ETF and Alesana first. Then move up. That's how I did it at least, and now I can understand it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah I don't watch TV in foreign languages either.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't go out of my way to listen to foreigners talk.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Nope, not at all. If that were so, then screamo bands would apparently have been born singing like that, couldn't help it without being taught another way, and screamo bands can only communicate with other bands that sing in that style. Are you saying that screamo bands are for some reason taught to sing like that and only that? Foreigners grow up around a language that they have to speak in their enviroment, while screamo bands make a conscious decision to write songs that even people who speak the language of the songs have trouble understanding them. Trust me, the two situations are not at all the same.

I personally don't like screamo, so much as death growling. But the post still applies. Whatever, the ones who disagree get to miss out on a lot of incredible music.

My boyfriend listens to a ton of 'screamo' stuff. It honestly just pisses me off and gives me a headache. I don't see anything appealing about it. D: It's not really that I can't understand the lyrics because if I like the song I will listen to it over and over again until I learn the lyrics, or just look them up. I just don't enjoy being screamed at. :c I've really tried to get into it because I want to go to shows with James, but I really can't stand it. I sat at a Dillinger Escape Plan concert 10 feet away from the speaker and felt sick to my stomach. :x

Like I said, I don't like screaming as much as growling. Hm, I just gave DEP a listen, nothing too great there. A lot of the appeal with the bands is the amazing musicianship, which appears to be absent from them. The only band I listen to with actual screaming would be As I Lay Dying. I didn't like that kind of thing at first, either, but there were bands that definitely got me into it. Insomnium, Dark Tranquillity, Amon Amarth, Kalmah, Children of Bodom, etc. All got me into it. They have great composition, and someone told me to think of the vocals as just another instrument, and it really helped a lot. I'll admit that it's not for everyone, but it's an amazing experience for people who enjoy it.

James did admit that it's kind of an acquired taste, and you either love it or hate it. If the song is mostly singing, I can take a little bit of screaming. But goodness, Warped Tour was hell because it's mostly bands that scream in some form or another. I've never really thought of making the vocals into more of an instrument, which is actually rather good advice because the music I've heard these bands play really blends well with the screaming. I'm not sure if that made any sense... I'm sick and have been completely zoned out the past 3 days. Yes, I can see that. Everyone at Warped Tour was having a great time, no matter what kind of music they were into.

I took a look at your page; your taste in music doesn't seem too far off from this kind of thing. James is a pretty lucky guy. If you really want to get into it for him, I'll link a few songs that are pretty good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzjW--KUH1g http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yQ-REfn6Ao http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBXBnpiMuqA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKvS6gF12mE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_UOtc3Tldc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-f9B5Ki36BQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eJZGTedU6o Even if you don't like the songs, they're a good example of composition and instrumentals; the main reason I like this kind of music.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

My problem with music is I concentrate on vocals, so even if I like the instrumentals, once the vocals come into play it makes or breaks a song for me, no matter what genre it happens to be. x: He doesn't really listen to death growling so much. What he listens to is like A Day To Remember, Suicide Silence, Emmure, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Attack Attack!, As I Lay Dying (I think). I don't remember anything else because he refrains from playing it too much around me, haha. :3

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oooh, well there's your problem! Yeah, I don't like screaming, but I can listen to stuff like that because I focus on the music. If you focus on vocals, you'd probably like Rise Against. Aside from Queen, they're the only band who's vocals stand out to me. They're more punk than anything, though.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I seem to like different voices, like James Hetfield from Metallica... his voice is so cool and different and no what you'd expect from that genre, I think. I like bands who have distinguishable voices. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, After Midnight Project, My Chemical Romance... I could pick their voices out of a crowd and that's what I like because these days it seems like everyone sounds the same. e.e I will look into rise against. :3 I read your bio and you sound like me. It's scary. Well, except for the weapons thing. More indifferent to that area.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I used to just listen to whatever, mostly things like Metallica, Slayer, Queen, '80s stuff. My friend turned me onto Buckethead (my profile pic), and this guy just blew up everything I thought music was. It was odd, listening to just instrumentals, but I loved it. From then on, I was all over the place looking for music I loved. I still like the old stuff, but my interest landed mostly in Melodic Death metal and instrumentals. I enjoy music so much more now that my perception has been altered. I feel my music so much more than I listen to it, and it's just a bit easier to do if I focus on the instruments. I like growling, though. If I can learn the words and growl along, it just feels so powerful. However, Buckethead and Rise against were the only bands that succeeded in bringing me to tears with their music. Well, Eminem has, but that's 'cause I was going through a break-up. There's also 1 song, Deathbed by Relient K that makes mecry, but I don't talk about that.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Wow, I actually ran out of room. Meeting similar people is always cool. I don't know what it is about weapons, but I just love the hell out of them.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I've found that after I get into a band/artist to the point where I know all the words to most of their songs, that's when I start to focus on the instruments. What's good about Metallica is that they have a bunch of instrumental songs. Not to mention, since it takes so long to start off their songs and they typically have a lot of spaces with just instruments throughout their songs, you're pretty much forced to appreciate the raw talent they all have. I tend to happen upon artists that I like myself. If someone shows me a band, I don't really get as into them as I do if I had found them myself. I'm so weird about music. o-x Metallica...when I went to their concert I swear I was in tears because it was so overwhelming. It was such an amazing experience. But other than that, I try to stay away from music when I'm feeling sad. I feel as though it will ruin a song for me forever if I'm crying during it. :|

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I ran out of room, too. xD That never happens! I've shied away from weapons since my cousin was charged with a felony stabbing at 16. x:
