+316 You should never judge someone for being atheist unless you want all the flaws in the logic of the Bible to be pointed out to you, amirite?

Can I do it anyways... it is fun to point out the flaws in that outdated fairytale.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well, you can if you like, but many will become mad and angered. Please leave the beliefs of others alone and try not to start fights. It makes life easier and more enjoyable to everyone.

Go for it, man. Let's see how you do. I want to see a fail right now.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Pretty much, yeah.

Unlike some who claim to be Christians, I know my Bible well enough to know that for those with an open-mind, there are no flaws. But then again, unlike some who claim to be Christian, I don't judge people based on their beliefs, or lack thereof.

Flaw #5619: A book about morals says that slavery is okay.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Wow.. Ok. I didn't read the entire thread but here we go. One, yes, the Bible depicted slavery as it occurred. For example, the Israelites were slaves to the Egyptians. This WAS depicted as being wrong because God told Pharaoh to let his people go. (And hence the 10 Plagues/Red Sea.) Two, with regards to "slavery" within God's people, there were STRICT rules as to how the slaves could and could not be treated. For example, beating of any sort was not allowed. Basically, they were workers that received housing and food in exchange. Also, the slaves were free to go after seven years or after the year of the Jubilee, whichever came first. Given the facts evident after a thorough reading of the Bible, God hardly condoned slavery in the form that we view it as most often. And for the "slavery" he did allow, it did not qualify for such a definition. Like I said, for those who know their Bible well enough, there is no flaws or contradictions.

@644039 (Etherial): However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)

Again, there were many protections and privileges that came with the fact that God allowed for 'slavery.' Consider: Ezekiel 21:26, 27 - If a master beat his slave enough for the slave to loose a tooth, he slave was free to go - at a considerable loss to the master. Also, privileges included not having to do any work on the Sabbath, which occurred weekly. (Exodus 20:10) Also, God held those with slaves accountable for their actions towards the slave. (Col 4:1) Of course, we also have to keep in mind that this was something extremely common in that period - having slaves living with you, etc. However, God's laws ensured that, despite the customs of the time, the slaves would be treated humanely.

From the example you provided, it seems more like God's laws didn't provide protection for anything short of being beaten to death. I wouldn't call that being treated humanely. I still don't understand how it could truly be a holy book that people are supposed to live by if it considers Israeli's to be a superior race and accepts slavery. Don't get me wrong the Bible does have some good morals in it, but every now and then there are fucked up things like this in it. Like the post says, it has flaws. There are some people out there who believe it is a literally perfect book, and that's wrong.

Well, you bring up some legitimate points and it's nice to see someone who's actually thought about it as opposed to just believed what they've been told, which sadly, is the case in some people, eh? :) Either way, to each their own. We all choose our own beliefs and as I mentioned before, no need to judge either way. :)

I'm not an Atheist, but I think you make a great point.

The beliefs in the bible are just selfish. What the fuck makes humans more important and special than any other living thing on Earth? We are more advanced yeah, but we have all the same parts. And don't give me any of that "humans have souls" bullshit. If anything, humans are the worst creatures on the Earth, so why do we get all this special treatment? Sorry to burst your bubble religious people, but you are on the same level as any living thing on this planet.

i think this may be because we're so used to defending ourselves all the time...
