+594 It's sad that a talented young man had to take his life for people to realize the importance of gay rights and how destructive bullying can be, amirite?

*four talented young men *their lives

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I was only referring to Tyler Clementi because we discussed him during my English class. The other, just-as-upsetting suicides are just as important, but they were less publicized. At least in my area...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

*Talented young MEN. There's been 5 recently, and that's not even the tip of the iceburg.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

As stated above, I only really heard of one. I know there have been others over the years, and I've always cared about stopping [or at least slowing] bullying and supporting gay rights. Rutgers is somewhat close to where I live [sort of, ish...] so it was all over the news. Every death is a tragedy, though. Even in my area, there was a death because of bullying not even 2 years ago.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't think there is going to be any drastic change, though. The dividing line will remain more or less the same for the next few years, most likely.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The suicides of these young men and women are already causing people to realize how bad this issue has become so change should come soon.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes, but it's not as if these are the first gay youths to commit suicide, nor are they the first ones to be highly publicized. I'm not trying to be pessimistic, I'm just saying. It takes a lot to change people.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That's the problem with people. They think "Oh wow, that's so sad. I can't believe that sort of thing is still happening." And then they don't take any steps toward changing it. Change doesn't come on it's own.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's because the people who are against change are more vocal and organized. The people who are for it never seem to congregate; they don't have anger to fuel them, only peace, and peace doesn't have the same rallying power, sadly. Even when it does, people see peace advocates and blow them off as naive hippies or annoying "libruls" or something. It's a shame, but honestly I don't know what to do about it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

you could argue that they would have MORE ambition...more of a desire to resist and deny this immoral amd unjust... like any gov't change and revolution.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

@684509 is right. My school is taking more steps towards stopping bullying. A survey recently went around, and more people are aware. You also have a point, though. Right now, it's a big deal. But in a few years, people will get bored with the lack of extreme results. It's disappointing how short the attention spans are :/

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes, that's exactly my point. Whenever a highly publicized bullying case gains national attention, we have yet another round of "Bullying 101." But it doesn't get through to people. They become fazed and desensitized. A few months later and it's like nothing happened.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

And even though it was a tragedy, there are still people out there who continue to live an ignorant life, unaffected. It's sick how people can view another human being as less than him/herself and not feel anything when he/she takes his/her own life.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Bullying is NOT going to stop. People will always have certain opinions towards others who are different from themselves. Kids/teens especially will NEVER stop. Its normal. As much as tight wads on their high horses think they're better cuz they don't...oh wait. They're better? Everyfuckingone bullies. Its sad that people kill themslves over it but seriously? Why the fuck does it matter what someone YOU DON'T KNOW or someone that just doesn't mean shit to your life says? 'Omg he called me a faaaag' good. Get the fuck over it. Really its worth ending EVERYTHING? Cool. Idiot.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(wow.): The change people are going for here is that gay youth will know that's it okay to be gay even though others don't approve. They have those "Things get better" videos going on now.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(wow.): Wow. Aren't you positive? You probably don't know what it's like to be bullied a lot, especially over something you're sensitive about. If you were really sensitive about your appearance, and people constantly called you ugly, gross, etc. you'd get pretty upset. It's a tragedy that people go as far as killing themselves, but people get traumatized. You're right. It won't stop, but there are ways of slowing it down, or making people more aware of the damage they cause/that is caused.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(wow.): You don't know how painful being bullied is. I'm bullied because I'm not a perfect supermodel-hot girly-girl and when my class watched the CNN student news thing about bullying, I nearly cried when people acted like it wasn't a big deal. It is, and it's sad how people are so ignorant. Bullying isn't something that can be fixed overnight, but people are doing absolutely nothing to help the problem. You say everyone bullies, yet I know how it feels and try not to. I'm nice to whoever I can be, and don't make fun of people on purpose. I don't want to be the person that made fun of someone right before they killed themselves. If I did that, I could never live with myself. And if you bully, you never know if you'll be the person that pushed them over the edge.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I hate to break it to you, but people have realized bullying can push people to drastic actions long before this poor man passed away. And in my opinion, this makes the people who committed this act of hate even more guilty. May he rest in peace and hopefully find happiness wherever he may be.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yeah people need to stop bullying. Ive been bullied all my life but its fuking retarded to kill yourself over it. Stop using it as a crutch to get sympathy. The human psyche isnt a delicate flower. SUCK IT THE FUCK UP

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You say it's retarded to kill yourself over being bullied- you don't see how deep my emotional scars are. One guy that's nice now used to bully me. I don't know if I can ever recover from that. I clearly see he's changed, but some things can't be forgiven. I don't know how you can tell us to suck it up when you say you've been bullied. Perhaps you're fine because your physical wounds have healed. Emotional scars take far longer to heal, sometimes even a lifetime. Please don't say things like that- you may inadvertently be the person to push someone else over the edge.

"Jumping off the gw bridge sorry" Last thing he said on his Facebook page...that's sad. (Not sad as in, "wow thats pathetic" more like..daaaamn that's terrible.)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Tyler Clementi didn't kill himself for being teased about being gay. His roomate had a live feed of him having sex. That would effect anyone, gay or straight. Are people not realizing this?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No, I understand that. But he was bullied, mostly because he was gay.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i know exactly how you feel. When I was in 6th grade I was bullied by about three people. They either took something that I personally owned or would call me names. My sixth grade homeroom teacher told me in front of my whole class how much she hated me and the last day of school I got punched in the face. That experience caused me to try to avoid black people and (im black korean) only make friends that werent ghetto in any way. Until some of you actually know what its like to be bullied then don`t post negative comment.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

he didn't HAVE too...none of them HAD to. it was a choice they made and a very stupid one at that. everyone deals with something, a lot of people are bullied for many different reasons. you CHOSE to be gay, other things people are made fun of/bullied for is not by choice...no one is born gay, it's the way of life you choose for yourself and everyone knows where it gets them and how much hatred there is towards gay people...so if that's what you CHOSE to be then shouldnt whine and bitch when you get picked on or bullied...suck it up and grow up! if they kill theirselves over what some other idiot said to them then i say they got what they deserved...it was no one's choice but their own. so i dont see why this is such a big deal...it was their choice to be gay, their choice to kill theirselves, so why can't we all just move on!!! and yes i have been bullied and picked on, but it's called growing up and gettin' over it! not takin' the pussy way out! now EVERYONE MOVE ON!!!!!!!!!!!!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No one fucking chooses to be gay. open your Fucking eyes and stop being ignorant. the minds of gays and lesbians are structured differently than a straight person's. it is absolutely horrible and cruel to Fucking bully someone over how they were born.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

"Structured Differently?" You act like they are not human. As much as I am for gay rights things aren't going to change soon. I mean people still get bullied for being born a dwarf, midget or having a learning or mental disability. Face it, some people are just ruthless.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Those wimps didn't have to take their lives, I have no sympathy for them. Tough it out pussy!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Not everyone can "tough it out". Not everyone feels completely secure.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Lol. Why sad?
