+531 When you have a nosebleed, everybody is yelling at you to either hold your head up or down. If you do one thing, the other party gets mad, amirite?

It's up.

It's down

It's down. Otherwise the blood gets into your nose and throat.

If you hold it up, you'll get blood in your throat, but it'll stop after, say, two minutes. If it's down, you won't get the bad taste, but it'll only stop once it runs its course.

It's down, 'cause that way you don't choke.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No it's up. It only stops if you hold your head up.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Um, no. It isn't. If you lean back, blood could get in the windpipe causing a blocked airway, or go into the stomach. Blood may irritate the stomach lining and cause the you to vomit or worse, choke. The only way to stop a nosebleed is to apply pressure to the area below the nose bridge.

Is it weird if I just got a nosebleed? I tilted my head back. BAM! thirty seconds later it's done. Two weeks ago my friend refused to tilt his head back, his lasted around 10 minutes. It was insane. I think you just made that bit up.

I took a first aid class taught by a tenured nurse. Trust me and thePretender, it's down.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Okay, down for what? We may be arguing two different points here. I know that putting your head up will stop it and clog up your nose. What's the benefits for down?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It doesn't drain into your stomach and make you sick, plus the fact that blood from any injured location on your body becomes contaminated with bacteria once it leaves your body and comes in contact with the 'outside world' (the outside of the cut) so that bacteria can make you sick as well. And yeah, same for the whole choking idea. If the bleeding is bad enough or you inhale wrong, it could end up in your windpipe or lungs and cause choking or blockage. While I admit that it doesn't usually happen, there's always that possibility.

http://www.wikihow.com/Stop-a-Nose-Bleed Nope. Not made up. No need to act like you know everything there is to know about a nosebleed because you just got one. I'm pretty sure everyone's had a nosebleed before. Read the article.

It depends on the severity of the bleeding, if it's a slow bleed and/or little blood is coming out and/or it hasn't been bleeding for a long time then it's better to stick your head up, so the blood does not get everywhere, clots quicker and slows down. You should put your head down if it's severe as blood draining into your stomach can make you sick in large amounts.

I'm SO prone to bloody noses, so let me explain: -If it's just a few drops, you let it be. Grab a tissue. Otherwise, you SLIGHTLY tilt your head back, pinch right below the bridge of your nose[or ice it] and grab a tissue. You will taste a little blood, but it'll stop quickly

DOWN, YOU FOOLS!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

This is exactly what happened to me a week ago. I was at my homecoming pre-party with friends and I had a nosebleed. It lasted for 45 minutes. It was awful because it was very severe. My friend's mom (who is a nurse) said in my case, down, so 1. I'm not chugging blood down my throat and 2. It'd clot easier. Also I iced and held the bridge of my nose. Now, my friend's boyfriend always makes fun of me by holding the bridge of his nose at me.

POLITICS I TELL YOU!!!!!!!!!!

Down. Definitely down. Especially for severe nose bleeds. I've had nosebleeds all my life. When I was little, my parents thought up and I ended up puking blood.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's down. It's dirty blood , don't want that shit going down your throat. Eck.

I read in a first aid book that it was down, but my grandmother had a nosebleed once and her doctors said it was up. So nobody knows/can agree on it.

It's down. It lasts longer, but believe me, it's safer.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I think you should lean your head out a bit ( not up nor down).
