-101 America means the whole of the south AND north american continents, not just the USA, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

In Brazil they don't say they live in America. Only people from the US say they live in America.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I think you'll find the point the op is making is that people in the US saying their country is America are wrong

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't think I'm wrong for saying I live in America. It is the United States of America.. No one's going to confuse it with another continent in North or South America.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Chill little girl. I didn't say you were wrong. I merely interpreted the post since you seemed to miss the point. Call yourself American all you want. The arrogance of the founding fathers was not your fault. They were the ones who decided the only America that counted was that under their control and the rest were not worth their time. You can hate me for saying it but it's just a fact of life.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

There is no other America! There's a North America, a South America, and a country called America! It's simple!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

First of all, YOU need to chill out. Second, you're obviously not American.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(Bitzinator):Chill Little Girl? Wtf..(depending on where you live) Your people were probably the founding fathers. Hate your own people then.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Oh I do. Australian history was a complete mess. My ancestors weren't a part of it since they were over in England but it was still a shameful time in our past.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's been like that for a long time.. it would've been changed by now if it was that big of a deal.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Everywhere else in the word "State" means country, and since all the states are united under one nation, in north AMERICA, it's called the united states of america. If Americans weren't so egotistical they would know everyone isn't talking about them when they say "America"

by Anonymous 13 years ago

They don't call people from South America, Mexico or Canada Americans, they call themselves South Americans, Mexicans and Canadians. And you wouldn't refer to both North and South America to be called America, it would be called the Americas. So you can run and tell THAT, home-boy.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Have you EVER gone to Brazil? obviously not. Yes we consider ourselves Americans and a lot get mad when someone calls you guys Americans. There is a separate term for those who are from the US. Get your facts straight.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Holy shot can you people stop saying this? There is no other nation with the word America in it's name, so we can call ourselves Americans. There is no continent called America, I don't know why you think there is. Besides, what would you have us call ourselves? United Statesians?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Maybe you should be US-Americans, like Native- Americans or African-Americans?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

US-Americans? Canadians aren't called Canadian-Americans?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You're an idiot.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

But why would we do that when we live in a place called America? There is a continent called North America and a continent called South America, but there's no other place on earth that just calls itself America. Canadiens are North Americans and Canadians, but they're not Americans.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Canadians*

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Thanks I fat fingered it the first time.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Haha sorry, I like me my grammar/ spelling.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That refers to the race of the person...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Relax it was only a suggestion. You really think I care that much what you want to call yourself? I am well aware it refers to the race of a person. Race was a term coined by the "Americans" after all. I just think people make to big a deal about this sort of stuff.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

This post isn't opinion, it's false fact. You were wrong, and now you know the mistake you made.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Say what you like. You're taking the whole thing too seriously. Sometimes things can be said in fun and people like you take it the wrong way. So I'm sorry you couldn't see that I really don't care but hey, I really don't care. =D

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Are you mad? The reason there's so much controversy on this post is because this post is wrong, and it's just so dumb that somebody could think of such a thing. Then, there's people like me who want to enlighten the OP and people like you that they are wrong.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You can try and "enlighten" us all you want but an atlas will tell you the OP is indeed correct. North, South and Central America are known as the Americas. And no I'm not mad. Just plagued by an unnatural level of common sense. Something you seem to be lacking by continuing to try and convince me I am wrong. Sorry

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I said that it was called the Americas. You just don't call Central America, America. For example, Mexicans come to America for opportunities. But what you're saying is that they are already in America. USA is the only place refered to as America. If you went to Argentina, you wouldn't call the people there Americans, instead they would be called Argentines. Are you understanding what I am saying?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I am but you clearly are not understanding what I am saying. I agree with you but if I was to say I was going to America it wouldn't necessarily mean I was going to the US. You'll find that most of the world outside of the US would agree with me on that.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No, if you said you were going to America, it DOES mean you're going to the US. However, if you say you are traveling to Central America or South America or North America it could mean any country within the continents. And if you said you were going to the Americas it would mean you were going to North/ South America.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

And that's where our opinions will be forever devided. If I was going to the US I'd say I was going to the US. It's nothing personal against you so don't get so defensive. It's just that if you came to my neighbourhood you'd find 9/10 people would agree with me over you. And, at a guess, I'd say if the situation was reversed, I would find the same in your neighbourhood. It would be like you going to Great Britain and saying the word "fanny". Same word, different definitions.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Fanny meaning, ass?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Not in GB. It refers to femal genitals.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Nice.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

America is technically THE CONTINENT. YOU people call yourselves Americans because that's how you were raised but if you look up America, the true definition is the whole continent.

Calm your jets, chickadees. Potato, potato. Damn, that doesn't really have the same ring on the internet.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You guys all have good points but my friend is from South America and he hates when people call the USA America.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

South America is a continent. North America is a continent. America is a country

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Chill, people. Get inside your refigerator and cool down. The only thing the OP said was that North and South America is part of the Americas. So people in Brazil could say they are American, just like people from France can say they are European. It's just the worlds general misconception of the word American. Although it is rightfully so that they have that idea. No one is saying that people from South or the other parts of North America WANT or SHOULD call themselves American, but they can if they want. And if you get confused, that's your own problem. Sorry if someone already addressed this. I didn't read all bajillion of the comments.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't own a refigerator, or anything that needs to be figered in the first place, let alone REfigered.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Good job staying on topic. =)

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm sorry, I had to do it, I can't type the word America without it looking weird now.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well. Maybe if you invested in a refigerator, everything would make sense.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I suppose you're right. Sorry for my first comment, now I'm off to Sear's!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

This post is stupid. And Biznator, the founding fathers were NOT arrogant. Have some respect, moron.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The AmericaS are the two continents. It's gotta be plural. There's not really something else we could call ourselves, anyway. United Statesians? People of the United States of America? It doesn't really matter why it's called that. School used to mean spare time. Words change.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The word "America" is starting to look weird now.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The only people that call people who live in the USA "americans" are the people who live in the US. In spanish speaking countries they NEVER call them americans.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

We can all blame Amerigo Vespucci for this mess.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The whole fucking continent, ranging from Alaska to Argentina IS called "America" not The Americas or some shit like that. And if we people from you supposed "other Americas" get pissed at this is because when we say we are from Central or South America, people ask "Oh, which state?" It is stupid, but it's not your fault, you were raised to call it that way. And we DO call ourselves americans, you might aswell have been named Statesians or Staters or whatever the fuck your founding fathers felt like naming themselves. I'm gonna get thumbed down, because most people reading this are from the States.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

What about Greenland?
