It's for the same reason we don't eat insects even though many of them are safe to eat. They're yucky.

I've never found anything weird about "it looks yucky, don't eat it". In fact if our ancestors hadn't lived by that same rule, we might not be here today!

It's such a strong feeling, though, that it's reached things that aren't even mildly harmless. Asymmetrical fruits are repulsive to most humans. And a few insects are actually good for your health, even some we see everyday. A lot of survival instincts are pretty much useless now so I don't find much use to paying attention to them. Well I mean, if I'm falling over, I'll try to stop myself but things like shyness and generic fears (darkness, for example) are really useless to us now. But I guess that's why we have culture, so we can exclude the things we don't need and replace them with the ones we do need.
