We should care more about what they stand for than what they look like.

But looks still play a role if something is not aesthetically pleasing then wouldn't you be more inclined to the better looking one? Not to mention that you can relate how they can manage a state to how they care of themselves. Obviously what they bring to the table is more important but if each candidate is promising the same thing, change for the better I will most likely vote for the better groomed and dressed and visually pleasing one because it shows they have good habits in cleanliness which is always a good sign for me @700022 (WhatsThatInMyFridge):

Politicians rarely ever stand for the same things. Also, being visually attractive is not something I consider to be important in a candidate. It seems that when we do have an attractive candidate, some people vote for them because of their looks.
