+159 So we can't learn about today's religion in school, but we can learn about religion from ancient societies? That's like not teaching us how to use a computer, but teaching us how to use an abacus. amirite?

You have to understand another society's motivation to why they did the things they did in the context of history. Unless you go to a private religious school there is no place for it, that's why you go to church/learn from your parents.

But see, then you're likely to only get one point of view. If you learn religion by going to church, you're only going to learn that church's religion. If your parents teach you, they may be biased towards the religion they chose - I mean, they chose it, so obviously that believe it's right and want you to adopt it, too. I think it's important to have somewhere to go to learn about a variety of religions so you can choose one for yourself.

One of the requirements to get confirmed in my Methodist church was to attend a catholic and baptist church service and a Jewish service. The intent was to make sure that we were joining the church we wanted to.

That's not the same. It's more like learning about ancient leaders instead of current ones. In the grand scheme of things, the ancient religions are more important than how religions are currently.

If we learned about the histories of modern religions, the religious right would throw a fit.

Ancient religions have been proven wrong. They're stories now. We know they're not real but they're cool to think about. Modern religions are extremely controversial and send people into fits of rage if you say one goddamn thing wrong. But it's only a matter of time that our modern day religions become ancient and disproved, too. I hope I live long enough to see that day.

They weren't proven wrong any more than modern religions have been, it's just that all their followers died.

There is a class in my school called "world religions" as an elective. i think its great that if someone had the desire to learn about it, they have that option. but i hate schools that ban even talk about religion.

I took a world religions class in grade 10. We learnt about Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism and Sikhism.

I don't know where you go to school, but we learned about all major religions past and present in my school... objectively, of course, but we still did.
