OWNED

I approve of this idea and from now on I'm gonna spell the Internet the way it deserves to be spelled.

Indeed, good work, Batman.

So is the word "Dumpster". IT's a trademark of the Dempster Dumpster Corporation (now defunct, I think). Now you know! Although I still don't get why internet is a proper noun. It's built from fundamental parts of the English language -- not just made up like "Dumpster" or "Google" or something like that.

Nevermind, I read the Wiki article and get it now. It's like distinguishing between /The/ Holocaust and any other holocaust.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

Ah yes.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

Ha, I knew that (but I'd forgotten)! Well, the Internet describes the entire thing, the entire worldwide network, whereas "internets" are the smaller networks (or internetworks). Anyway, it's a big debate, but I still think it's a proper noun. Also, just because something's not a company or such doesn't mean it's not a proper noun (The Milky Way, etc.)

But the "Argument for common noun usage" section of the article raises valid points, though. >> Critics of the usage as a proper noun argue that other things that are unique yet distributed, such as "the power grid", "the telephone network", and even "the sky", are not considered proper nouns, and are thus not capitalized << And also, >> Words for new technologies, such as Phonograph in the 19th century, are sometimes capitalized at first, later becoming uncapitalized. <<

by Anonymous 14 years ago

True, but I think the Internet holds a slightly higher place in society than phonographs and such.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

That's not really the point, though. In any case, those other technologies were at one time in their prime as well. When the next big thing comes around to replace the internet, it won't be as novel or important anymore.

by Anonymous 14 years ago

True, I guess.
