There's a bunch of denominations with most religions. For example- Orthodox or reform Judaism, Shi'ite Muslim, etc.

(4 posts above me): If there weren't branches of these religions, there would be even more intrafaith war. Thus, much more conflict would be at hand. For example, when Martin Luther saw what the Catholic Church was doing back in his time period, he wanted to change it (not start a new religion). But when the commune found out about Martin Luther and the faults he saw in the Church, they revolted against the Establishment. Riots, crime, and chaos followed, untill a group of educated people brought the non-Catholic (yet still Christian) people together and established the Lutheran Church. What kind of world would us Christians be living in today if the Protestant Church hadn't split off? As time goes on, people will continue to have conflicting beliefs, and if we try and pull them together and make them a part of one universalizing homogenous religion, we may as well be Communist.

You could consider each sect of each religion their own religion because they really are. And saying there should be no religion is like saying there should be no theories about anything to get rid of conflict. It's just stupid, even if you don't believe in them.

(This is directed at the actual comment) The different branches of Christianity ARE different religions. Each different Protestant church is its own religion. The reason they are all called Protestant is because all of them happened as a protest against corruption and sketchy beliefs in the Roman Catholic Church. All of the Christian churches, Roman Catholic, Protestant, and Eastern Orthodox are all part of Christianity, because Christianity is a vague term for the monotheistic religions that believe that Jesus Christ was the son of God and the Savior of Man.
