i just call them by their first and "middle name" in person and hope they realize how annoying it is. ex "oh hey Jim 'bossman', how's it going?"

If it is a pointless thing it is bad, yet if it is the name most people refer to them as like when someone may as well legally change their name to the nickname as everyone knows them as that or if it holds meaning then it is fine. Mine is 'Hector' due to a rather nice story about when I helped a homeless scottsman and he was always too drunk to remember my name so called me Hector - which he told me is an old Scottish tradition for when forgetting the name.
