Who is embarassed by society? It's not like we know of any beings that belong to a more advanced society, so there's no reason to feel shame.

I think they're saying more that we should be embarrassed as people of what society has become.

In order to be ashamed, I would need somebody who wasn't implicated to exist. If I do something stupid or disgusting, but so has everybody else, I'm not going to feel shame.
