As a kid, you didn't even notice races and thought your friends just had different tans, amirite?
by Anonymous13 years ago
I was old enough to have race explained to me before I ever met anyone with a different skin colour.

I am biracial so I grew up with a white mother and a black father. I couldn't really tell the difference at all until I got into school and people questioned me.

I don't think I did, I just noticed people had different skin color. I just remember not realizing it was genetic, and wondering why no one in my family was black...

Goes to show that race is a social construct

an artificial status ...

I noticed, I just didn't know any of the stereotypes assoctiated with each race.

I used to think black people had some sorta illness...

My friend really is/was naturally darker than me, and when we were little, his mom and mine were like Are you gonna marry him one day?
I was like no, and pointed to my skin like it was a sin.
*I'm not like that today just for the record

Oh no, the childhood is the only time in which you can even ignore all of these beliefs forced onto us, if you thought that YOURSELF as a kid, that's just awful.
by Anonymous13 years ago
I know it sounds horrible. I just posted it because I did notice that he was different from me when I was little.

My best friend since 1st grade is black and, I'm not even lying, I really didn't even notice she was black until like 7th grade. lol
No, I noticed it but it was never that important so...

I remember in third grade our teacher had to explain racism to us.
by Anonymous13 years ago
well... not really. we were ALL tan. i went to an all-Indonesian kindergarten that time (but i learned 2 tell the locals from the foreigners)
it was until middle school that we have different races
by Anonymous13 years ago
When I was little I thought the only two races where black and white. I didn't know there where such things as hispanic, asain, etc.
by Anonymous13 years ago
Oh that too, when you get older than not realizing races at all, but not old enough to actually differentiate between so many. I thought Asian people were just white with funny eyes, and Hispanic looked completely white, only sometimes tanner than others.
