Running barefoot is actually a good thing. It's not like it's harmful to your sole and it actually decreases your chances of foot and ankle injuries.

It builds up calluses. That's a really good thing. Until they get so thick you need to cut them off with scissors.

There is no direct evidence that it decreases chance of foot and ankle injuries. There's actually a lot of people who hurt themselves barefoot running because shoes change the way you move and they provide cushion to absorb the shock. There have been a lot of injuries barefoot running, particularly metatarsal stress fractures, but correlation=/=causation. However, there are things on the ground to cut yourself on. The ground is dirty and will probably give you an infection. Running barefoot is not good for your sole.

I'd just like to say that there are pros and cons to both sides. I'm not saying that shoes are evil but that barefoot running is pretty awesome. (Obviously you run the risk of stepping on unpleasant things, but that's not what I'm getting at.)
When you run barefoot, you tend to land on your forefoot and point your toes, which helps reduce shock. Sneakers, on the other hand, have excessive padding which causes most people to land on their heels (which is a BAD thing) and thus makes runners more prone to muscle injuries.
barefoot running = landing on your forefoot = shock absorption = less injuries
Boom.
It also causes you to use more muscles, so you get a better work out and you improve your balance :)

When I run long (for me) distance, I take giant steps and land on my heels, but if I'm going for speed, I can land on my forefoot even in sneakers.

Any research done concludes that they can't tell if it's better or worse for your foot because there's pros and cons to both sides. Injuries occur in both shoe runners and non shoe runners, correlation=/=causation. Speaking strictly of soles, it's not good for them. Unless you like calluses.

But they can see how running barefoot affects your muscles differently.
Also, calluses are a good thing (well, when they don't get out of hand). They may not be aesthetically pleasing but they're certainly beneficial and then you'll no longer have to worry about stepping on things ;) So it is good for your sole.

I like calluses. They're like armour, and it's so much easier to scratch your calves.

The problem is you basically have to step on things to get to not worry about stepping on things anymore. Most people wear shoes everywhere anyway, it's not that much of a problem.

I prefer to wear shoes. I just want calluses, so i'm gonna run barefoot around the parking lot every now and then.

You don't necessarily have to step on something painful in order to get calluses. It's just that it's really fuckin hard to find areas without those threats. Which is pretty much why I don't run barefoot, although I'd like to.

I personally wouldn't risk it, even if there are some benefits to be obtained. Just the thought of running around a parking lot makes me think of accidentally stepping on a rusty nail and getting lockjaw. Of course I'm being pretty specific in that example, but my point is that the possibility of harm is always there.

You don't have to step on something painful, I said you have to step on things to get to the point where you don't have to worry about stepping on things. Plus you'd probably have to run on the sidewalk or on the road, and it would be less than comfortable until you built calluses.
