Wouldn't it be *good? At pole vaulting? Because I don't see modest people needing to get over themselves... Sorry if I'm ruining the pun or something, it just doesn't make sense to me.

It works both ways, I think. In the OP's case, I think it's representing people that say they're bad at something just to get compliments from other people. example: "OMG I CAN ONLY RUN A MILE IN 4 MINUTES" "No! You are so fast! Don't be so hard on yourself!"

But the post doesn't say "If you say you are bad" it says "If you think you are bad" so it doesn't mean compliment-fishers. But w/e.
