What about his plan to destroy the entire world? Wasn't that slightly more heartless? Aerith dying was probably more affecting, but I wouldn't say it was even close to as heartless as a lot of other game's villains.

No, stabbing her was worse because she was mid world-saving prayer. So its about equal, except for the fact that he also kills one of the most innocent characters ever.
