+78 Wanting to go to college 8 hours away from home just to be far away is stupid. You can go to a college just as good in the same state. And being only 2 hours away from home makes life so much easier when you have to travel home for the holidays or whatever, amirite?

It really depends on the situation.

I go to school in Connecticut but live in Maryland, a 7 hour drive at best. If there is traffic and you go through New York City it can take you well over 10 hours. It is nice ot feel the independance, and its a lot of fun being in an entirely new place.

You can still feel "the independance" going to college that's 2 hours away, it doesn't make a difference because you can still dorm. But where the college is shouldn't matter, what should matter are the academics, the program of studies, etc.

There is always that sense of no worries my parents can pick me up in no time kind of attitude. My sister had this problem, she ended up coming home every weekend and then she dropped out. I understand about whether it has a good program, but there are other schools that have the same program that is probably just as good or even better. It is good to expand your horizons and going two hours away from home won't do it as much.

Not everyone can go to a school "just as good" that's only a few hours away. If someone has something specific they want to study that's only offered at some schools, or if they really want to go to a school with a highly rated program or something like that, sometimes that means you have to travel a bit more to get there. Like you said in another comment, many things should be considered to find the right school for a person. Academics, the size of the school, programs offered, special opportunities or clubs the school has, AND location of the school should certainly be considered. Some people (I'm guessing like the OP) would rather stay closer to home, so they can visit easier or more often, while others would like to live in a certain area of the country or go to a school where no one from their high school is going. Each school will have pros and cons, it's up to the person for deciding which is the best fit for them. I don't think anyone is stupid for picking their best fit.

Most of my friends want to go to colleges so far away from home just so they can be far away from home. Things like academics, internships and programs have nothing to do with their reasoning, they just want to be far away. I also find it very hard to believe that the only good colleges for some people are 10 hours away.

They may be able to go to a "good" school, but maybe not the best. In cases like you've said where the only reason they went there was to get far away, I agree that it's a little ridiculous, but I find it hard to believe that there weren't other factors influencing their decisions. But for example, my major is only offered at about 10 schools in the country, so there are specialized programs out there where a person may have to travel a bit to go there. Most people probably won't have that interest, but it is a possibility. I'm sorry all your friends will be far away from you, but I also think that maybe going off on their own, and away from all of their friends will force them to try new things and be with different people, while if they were closer to home and current friends they may not experience as many things because they could fall back on hanging out with the same people.

Being far away from home is an exciting way to gain life experience, as well as a great way to get out of an emotionally abusive home.

I'm 9 hours away from home ... but I'm still in the same state. God Bless Texas.

Just remember that a house is not a home for everybody.

A lot of them want to be far away from their parents. To do their evil deeds.
