But then you'd have to argue about what defines a 'good' moral compass as opposed to simply what you think is good and what someone else thinks is good. Then what you're really doing is forcing others to submit to your own ideals (which is essentially what laws are when all religion-based ideology is stripped away).

Obviously not. My morals may be different than yours. Laws are what set the standard for a society.
