Okay...how has no one caught this? First off, there was only slavery in the southeast part of this country, which was the only one still practicing slavery. So the chances he would have been free are pretty high.

The surname Freeman was created for former slaves. They had no surnames, and they couldn't legally take the surname of their owners. It was second only to Washington as a name choosen/assinged to freed slaves.
