+698 Math has the stupidest ideas for word problems. " A baseball bat's legth is measured with the term y=x^2+3x-6" seriously, let me measure the baseball bat, it's easier. amirite?

Though once you graduate and try to measure planet spheres across the galaxy...the equation might be a little more handy. :]

by Anonymous 13 years ago

The equations are useful, the word problems they use to teach them in highschool make no sense.

Actually, that equation results in a parabola, which is a curve. You can't measure a baseball bat with a curved function. So yes, that problem is quite stupid.

are you that person that makes fun of "horse walks into a bar and says" jokes cuz horses cant talk? grow up.

That's exactly what I was about to point out. Thanks XD

"Dave has 6 black socks, 8 red socks and 4 blue socks, for some reason Dave doesn't like to look when he puts socks on... What are the odds that Dave will wear red socks?"

"John has 5 trophies. How many different ways can he arrange them in? And with his soccer trophy first?" - Actual question I had in 5th grade.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Since that is a quadratic equation, that would mean the baseball bat changes length depending on how far you hold it off the ground.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It depends what the actual variables mean, the person didn't give the complete question. All that the quadratic means is that the differences are exponential.

Damn, if oly i was logged in whe i posted this

If only I was logged in when I posted it. The point is, we will never use the formulas for the situations they give us, when we can do it easier in real life. And the top of a baseball bat is curved, as is the length of it, just not a parabolic curve.
