It's called "handling," not "hand ball."

The ref sees things differently than you. They're on the court after all. But I must admit, most of the refs I've had for soccer were terrible. The ball would come in contact with me before it went out, but they'd still call in my team's favor.

I don't know about soccer, but in basketball, more often than not, the ref is right, as they know where to look and the finer details of the rules. In basketball, the referee watches the defence to determine who causes contact. So what may look like a foul to player/coaches/spectators really isn't a foul, 'cause they don't know where to look, or what to look for. I assume this is the same in soccer. Not saying referees don't make mistakes, I'm just saying that the majority of them know the rules better than you, and would referee a million times better than you. Referees know what to look for. Everyone else doesn't.
