+187 English teachers that always ask "how does this relate to your thesis statement?" in your essays should fucking die, amirite?

Well, I would hope that the sentences in your essay relate to your thesis. How odd would it be to read an essay saying "Benedict Arnold was a traitor and disgraced the name of Americans. His actions were deplorable. My favorite TV show as a child was Courage the Cowardly Dog."

My friend asked me to help her with her thesis statement and I blanked out on what it was

A thesis statement is a sentence to introduce the topic to the readers. For example, I'm writing a research paper on marijuana. My thesis statement is 'Due to its decriminalization and medicinal usage in several states, marijuana continues to be a widely-debated topic.' Basically, it's an introductory sentence.

It's the sentence that your whole paper is based on, not an introductory sentence. It basically states the point that you're trying to make and the reasons you believe this. Unless the point of your paper is that marijuana is a debated topic, that isn't the thesis.

My paper is solely based on controversy surrounding marijuana in the United States. I'm writing a purely factual paper, not an opinionated and persuasive paper. The definition of a thesis statement can vary depending on what kind of paper you're writing.

Normally I'd disagree with this, but after recieving a C+ on my 9 page Shakespeare term paper on manpulators mainly because I talked about the motives of the manipulators rather than the methods, as I had off-handedly stated in the beginning paragraph, I have to agree with you. I worked my ass off on the paper. Fucking C+.
