-199 you wonder what Bill gates was thinking when he put the letters on the keyboard in a random order, amirite?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Bill Gates didn't invent the typewriter, did he? They put the keys in the order they did to prevent them from jamming (on a typewriter).

the guys who invented the key board must have been high.amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

No.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I think the order of letters on a keyboard was intended to give an even distribution of all the letters that are featured in the most commonly typed words... or something. Maybe I'm wrong. But Bill Gates definitely didn't invent the keyboard.

The qwerty keyboard was invented before bill gates even created computers/systems

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Before Bill Gates was probably even born.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah probably, depends when typewriters were created.

Late 1800s I think.

The QWERTY keyboard was design to slow down typists because on typewritters, if you type to fast, they go all screwy. This was about 50 years before Bill Gates was born.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Yeah, it actually used to go in 'abc...' order, but it was too much for the typewriters to handle, since they would type so fast. We could very well switch back to that at anytime, but 'qwerty' keyboards are commonly accepted now.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I'M NOT SURE IF THIS IS CORRECT, but I once read that the inventor of the "abc" keyboard's secretary was so quick at typing that it annoyed him, and to confuse the secretary, he rearranged the keyboard in a "qwerty" format. I could be wrong, however.

To prove typing was easy with qwerty, the 'inventor' typed the word TYPEWRITER . Easy and fast because he placed all of those letters in the first line

by Anonymous 12 years ago

Bill Gates barely invented any hardware.

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I don't understand how the typewriters jammed in ABC order, but not in QWERTY. Once everyone got used to the placing of the letters, wouldn't the typewriters jam then, too?

by Anonymous 12 years ago

I agree. People would get used to the QWERTY style keyboards and type just as fast as they do now. I guess they made QWERTY to stall until typewriters became obsolete.
