I love Harry Potter, but it's basically a recreation of WWII, amirite?

Voldemort definitely parallels the rise and of Hitler in the 7th book. It's not exact, but really, think about it; Voldemort has convinced some followers that the muggle and muggle-borns are polluting the wizarding world and making life more difficult for the pure-bloods, he executes muggles, muggle-borns, and wizards who disagree with him, he convinces the rest of the wizards that what he is doing is okay through his control of the Daily Prophet and other media, and replaces all of the government institutions with his own agents. Even the movie reflects this; the propaganda in the Ministry scene is similar to German propaganda, business is conducted in a very military and regimental way, and even the uniforms of the guys who chase Harry, Ron, and Hermione are similar to the Nazi uniforms. It is solidly based on WWII but the parallels are there.

In response to “Voldemort definitely parallels the rise and...

Doesn't that parallel the rise and reign of any dictator? Think of Saddam and the Kurds its the same.

My friend had a whole theory, and a lot of people noticed the similarities.

There are a lot of similarities, but there are also a lot of differences. While J.K. Rowling may have been basing part the story line on WWII, I don't think every detail is meant to be symbolic.

Uh, no. I don't recall learning about how a ragtag team of teenagers ran around the German countryside and assassinated Hiter (assuming that in this analogy, Voldemort=Hitler). Plus Voldemort seemed to be mainly operating in Britain, while WWII was obviously international. The only thing in Harry Potter reminiscent of WWII is how Vikdemort came to power, but as someone said above, that same template is true for many other dictators besides Hitler and the other Axis leaders. Plus, the older books in the series aren't even about Voldemort coming to power; they're just about Harry having adventures at school.

That's why it's such an amazing series; J.K. Rowling was able to (purposely) write a series reflecting the problems with today's societies and governments, while still making it a superb children's series. Someone once asked her if the political messages in her books were intentionally tied to WWII, and she said yes, and that (bad paraphrasing here) "people shouldn't believe everything they're being told by the government".

Yes because there totally were wizards in WWII...

Just sayin....

Yeah! I remember when Hitler found out how to make horcruxes! I thought we were all screwed for a bit there!

OK, The two stories don't have to be EXACTLY the same.
But Hitler was part Jewish himself, and Voldemort's father was a muggle. The propaganda is quite similar too, with the posters and the statue in the ministry of magic. Also, during WWII all of the Jews had to be identified and they had to wear the yellow stars. This is like in HP7 when all of the muggle borns are being interrogated and labeled as liars and cheaters just because of their background.

I may be wrong here, but I think that Hitler himself wasn't part Jewish, but his mother worked for a Jewish family and that is where his anti-semitism came from.

... yeah, realized that ages ago ... but it's just in HP 7, and as said, mirrors the rise of any dictator.

I'm mostly interested in Umbridge, who reflects the truth-twisting ways of today's media. But whatevs. JK wins.
