I can't figure out what this is actually supposed to mean. I mean of course it's important to actually get on the train if you're trying to get anywhere... But is this some kind of metaphor?

Yes it matters, I don't want to go on a train leading to Alaska just because.

The context of this quote is misinterpreted, unless one sees the movie it came from, which is The Polar Express. This quote speaks of the impact that believing has. First see the movie, then understand the quote.

The quote has to do with religion and faith One thing about trains is like saying one thing about religions. It doesn't matter where they're going is like saying it doesn't matter the paths they take because they will all end up in the same place, with the same god. What matters is deciding to get on is the same as saying it is important that you pick a religion.

It's very simple; opportunities (especially ones that don't last for ever) are the trains. What matters is if you're going to actually take advantage of them. It doesn't matter what you say you're going to do, or where those opportunities COULD take you, what matters is whether you take ACTION.
