But it makes sense... Obviously they're not talking about throwing away all your food instead of eating it, they're probably talking about those people who guilt-trip you for not being able to finish absolutely everything on your plate, as if eating everything you're given will somehow prevent people on the other side of the world from starving to death.

Throwing away food may not make you a dick, but you are being wasteful. It just shows how you take it for granted that you have food when there are so many other people who don't. And YOU are being rude to people who are actually concerned about those who go have to go hungry, and may just be kind of sensitive to your joke.

What this person said ^^^ You would die. People die of starvation. It's disrespectful to those people. Even if you can't give it to them, eat it or save it in their name. If you can't do either of those, at least acknowledge that food isn't something you take for granted.

I'm not going to force myself to eat in the name of those who can't. "I'm really full, but there are those who can't eat this, so I will finish it all!" Eating it, saving it, or acknowledging it is not going to change that there is hunger in the world. I understand that there are those starving, and I honestly feel for them. I'm just saying that me eating it is not going to do them any good.

I agree with both sides. You shouldn't take your food for granted, because people are starving, but if you seriously don't feel like eating anymore, will starving people know/care? "You know, I'm dying of hunger, but imagine people stuffing their faces thinking of my plight! How heart-warming!" No, I don't think so.

Your body needs the energy, and the glucose. Also, if you throw it out, then nobody can have it. You're sure you can't save it? Give it to somebody else? Even the dog? I throw out food too, but I'm just saying that throwing is it out is not equivalent to eating it.
