It's not that they can't think about things. Babies think in human instinct and want. Want food, want sleep, want to take a crap. Ya.

Depends on how old they are, in one baby book I read it said they can understand basic words in their native tongue by 9 months.

yeah I think it's because they can't verbalize it. My baby sister is 16 months old and if you say something like ear or bellybutton she'll point to hers but she can only say words like "mama, daddy, mommy"

Babies are super smart. It would absolutely stun and amaze you to watch a week old baby and realize how much they 'know.' They most definitley can think, can understand, and even communicate in their own ways.
