+491 Without the ridiculously high metabolism some people are fortunate to have, there'd be a lot more obese people in the world, amirite?

i have a high metabolism, and its not THAT great, makes you too skinny...grrr.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Uh, sure. Grrr.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Don't grr me. I will grr like no other.

I completely agree. This is kind of a stupid complaint, but people are becoming extremely politically correct towards overweight people, while becoming less conscious of how bad it is to be too skinny. Never, ever would a normal person say "You're fat. Eat less hamburgers, fatty." However, I've actually had a few people tell me, "You're too skinny. Eat more! Haha," like that's something everyone wants to hear. Being too skinny sucks too, guys.

I read this while all 110 pounds of me is sitting in my chair with an empty bag of chips, a soda, a few oreos, and strawberries. Though the first comment has a good point.

Obese people have a higher metabolism than thin people. It's a common misconception.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I find that hard to believe, seeing as I eat more then most obese people.

On average obese people have higher metabolisms. They have more body mass and therefore need more calories to maintain that mass.

No, if they needed more calories, that would justify their eating. I have a high metabolism and eat a ton but don't gain weight, which is because of my metabolism. If obese people had a high metabolism, they wouldn't be obese. Unless you're saying that their metabolism goes up with your weight. If so, then that makes some sense. Sorry if I misunderstood.

Yes, that's what I'm saying. Your metabolism rises as you gain weight, so obese people have higher metabolisms than lean people. (I'm talking about basal metabolism--obviously if the lean person is an Olympic athlete he'll have a higher metabolism than an obese person.) You say that you eat a ton yet you don't gain weight. Obese people are the same way. An obese person may overeat and become 300 pounds, but if he then stays at 300 pounds for a year, it means that he is weight-stable, just like you are. The question should not be "Why do obese people eat so much" but "Why do obese people's bodies prefer to keep excess body fat."

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That makes sense. So since they get used to eating so much, their metabolisms speed up, and if they keep eating the same amount, they'll stay the same weight?
