+124 "Y'all" is a word, amirite?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Technically iit is two words put together... But still, nonetheless I am not a fan of it

by Anonymous 13 years ago

You and are is you're and you and all is y'all. If you're is a word, then y'all has to be.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

in Texas it is!(:

by Anonymous 13 years ago

And, you know, everywhere else in the Southern US.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I was just saying Texas because that's where I live, but yes definitely the other Southern states too!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

i live in new york and say ya'll... and have never lived in the south.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well, you defy the norm then.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

If it's not a word, what is it? A taco?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

fo sho

by Anonymous 13 years ago

In tennesse it's common.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes it is.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

are you from TN?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes, I live in Memphis.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

NO FUCKING WAY?!?!?!?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

In case you didn't get what I meant by the previous comment ^ it translats to "I'm from Memphis too and am very suprised that on a website with less than 20,000 members(I'm guessing) someone is from my city"

by Anonymous 13 years ago

:O omghhkp :D

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Y'all is more convieniant then saying "you guys", but being from the north I'm just not a fan of it...

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Exactly my point! Thankyou for understanding fellow northerner!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I don't see how it's not a word...just because you don't use it where you're from doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's a word. It's probably not correct grammar, but neither is ain't, and that's a word.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

@anything_chocolate and @i_love_you_and_tacos - Exactly!!

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I use y'all. But I draw the line at ain't. I just can't bring myself to say it.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I suppose it's a word, but I hate using it with a passion. It's not that hard to say "You all". :P

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I live in Georgia, and if I started saying "You all" people would look at me like I have three heads.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well, that doesn't really matter does it? People should just say whatever they want to say. But, if you don't mind it, then by all means, use it. I just don't, is all.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

you'd definitly get some looks for saying you all, or you guys for that matter

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's also not that hard to say "cannot", "do not" "will not", "you are", but people still use the contractions.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

That is true. I just don't like word, really.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It makes sense though, does it not? Combining you and all. I mean, that should be an acceptable contraction.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Speaking of contractions, why does "Does it not" contract into "doesn't it," because shouldn't it be "does itn't"?

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(...): because "does itn't" seems harder to pronounce.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm from the north and I say it all the time... y'all should try it some time.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

If y'all isn't a work, then can't, you're, doesn't, etc. aren't words.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's a contraction: You all= Y'all

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Y'all is a word for rednecks, therefore, not a real word, and should be laughed at.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'm not a redneck, neither is anyone in my family, but we all say y'all because it's a word for SOUTHERNERS.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Do you even know what a real redneck is? I'm not talking about what you see on TV, I mean a real, legitimate redneck.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Do I? Well yes, as I live in Florida, and am surrounded by them every time I travel to surrounding states.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

People, people. "Y'all" is not a word. It is a contraction, and it can refer to two or less people. If you are speaking to more than two people, it is grammatically correct to say "you all". But again, contraction =/= word, a contraction is two words.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

(<(^_^)>): Thank you! I scrolled all the way through the comments to see if anyone had said this.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Well, since you like being so grammatically correct, it should be "two or fewer people" and, um well a contraction is two words it together to make one so yes, contraction=word

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Y'all yep, I typed it in and spell check didn't seem to find anything wrong with it

by Anonymous 13 years ago

At most, y'all is a conjunction like don't, can't, and whatnot. Ai'nt, however, is another story.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's not a conjunction, it's a contraction.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

Yes, it's a word. A stupid one. But, a word nonetheless.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

It's a messy amalgamation of two words ('you and 'all'), so not a word.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I suppose you don't use "don't," "can't," or "wasn't," either.

by Anonymous 13 years ago

I'd say it is, for the reasons others have given - it is a contraction, and slang words are still words. I just wanted to add, if anyone else here is from New Zealand, was it odd to you guys as well when you heard the word "Southerner" meaning someone from South US, instead of South Island? Just I lived on the North Island, and we'd call ourselves "Northerners" and people on the South Island "Southerners", and even though we had negative stereotypes (although more a friendly jest thing) for them, it was different to the stereotypes for US Southerners. Though I'm probably looking for too small a minority here ...
