A third of infants are overweight. This should not happen, amirite?
by Anonymous13 years ago
Are these infants that are born overweight because of an overweight mother or infants that become overweight from being over fed?

I saw it on Yahoo! news.

So it's a combination of both. That is really, really sad. These kids are going to grow up not liking themselves and having low self esteem and bad health because of their parents' irresponsibility.

maybe it's just a stage? the chubby stage?
by Anonymous13 years ago
It's beyond chubby. They're like obeses babies. Fat to the point of unhealthyness.

I was 10 lb 4 oz...
I was also 20 days late and now I'm a healthy weight. I was only fat as an infant.
So, it depends.

Only in the USA...

Being a fat baby doesn't necessarily mean you're going to be overweight. My 1 & 1/2 year old baby sister was 11 lbs. 8 oz. when she was born and hasn't even doubled her birth weight.

i agree... and studies have shown that babies that are on the heavier side are less fragile, tend to be more alert and smarter than stick thin babies.

I remember reading somewhere that a study showed boys who weighed more at birth had more sex during their life time.

There's not much evidence that shows that overweight infants become overweight adults. Also, baby fat is necessary for the development of the baby. It is much better to have an overweight baby than an underweight baby.

"One 2009 paper published in the journal Pediatrics found that babies who gain weight rapidly in the first six months of life are at increased risk of being obese by age 3. Another study, published in April 2010 in the Journal of Pediatrics, found that heavy 6-month-olds are more likely to be obese as 2-year-olds."
I think the babies may have too much fat.

Yes, there is evidence of a overweight infants becoming overweight toddlers, but that does not extend to adulthood.

I like chubby babies.
A baby being overweight doesn't mean the baby will stay that way forever.

There's a difference between a baby who is naturally a little chubby, and the 98 pound baby you see on the Maury Povich show "Imma leet my babae eat fried chicken. cuz he like fried chicken. whatevvaaaa you don't know me"

I was born 5lbs and premature. When I was 9 until I was 17, I was extremely overweight... so baby weight has nothing to do with adult weight.

My older brother was over 10 lbs when he was born, and he's a tall, skinny little twig now...
by Anonymous13 years ago
I was a super chubby baby, and guess what? I turned out completely healthy.
by Anonymous13 years ago
Me, too... I was 9 lbs. and 7 oz.
by Anonymous13 years ago
I was 6 lbs. But my mom was overweight when she had me, so that's what's weird.
by Anonymous13 years ago
This is stupid. You can't over feed an infant. Just like you can't 'spoil' them. A baby only knows need, not want.

I babysit an eighth month old that weighs 22 lbs. They watch what she eats and their whole family is super thin, waifish even, except for the dad. Her two year old twin siblings weigh 28lbs. Chunky babies are not chunky just because people overfeed them.
